Benton's Story
Life
I graduated from McGavock in 1998. Went to MTSU and majored in English with a minor in Criminal Justice and Psychology. I graduated in August of 2002 and started immediately working for the Bredesen for Governor campaign. Bredesen won the election in November and I started working for the TN Dept. of Education in February (2003) as a political appointee. I got married July, 2005. Less than a month later, I started law school at Nashville School of Law. My wife Ashley and I currently reside in the Hermitage area.
School
High School was a good time for me, but it was most definitely a learning experience for sure. I'm glad I went to McGavock and I'm proud of the history that goes with McGavock. I'm glad to be out of school though and done with undergraduate.
College
I started at MTSU in the fall of 1998. I was sort of a bookworm for the first 2 years and then I started going to the Wesley Foundation. That was a great experience for me because it taught me leadership skills that I use today a...Expand for more
nd it taught me to be tolerant even more of other people and their different views. I was on the council there for a year and i was a member of several honor societies while I was in school there. I tried mock trial for a few years but decided it was too much drama for me and not enough law practice. I continued taking political science classes and I even got the opportunity to take V.P. Al Gore's class when he first left office and started teaching at MTSU. That was an awesome experience and the place where I first got involved in politics. I asked the VP how I could get involved in local/state politics and in a matter of weeks I had an internship with the TN Democratic Party. After my internship I was back in school and just before graduating I received a call about working on the Bredesen campaign through the Victory 2002 campaign which coordinates all the state wide campaigns for the Democratic Party. I graduated in August of 2002 and started working full time for the campaign right after the primaries.
