Bernadette's Story
Life
I moved to Florida from Papua New Guinea in 1983. I had been in PNG as a volunteer nurse for almost five years. My mother and father at the time were 86 years old and I thought I should be near them. As it turns out they did not need me right on top of them so I did many things - workwise - for the net ten years. Did Home Nursing, was Assistant Director of a Nursing Home, volunteered for a year and a half in Indiantown (they had 5000 Guatemalans there), FL, went to Homestead after hurricane Andrew and helped out there (stayed in tent city). All in all it has been very rewarding. My dad died in 1994 at the age of 96 and my mother lived...Expand for more
to be 101 and died in 1998. I lived with my mother after dad died and took care of her. I am now a Parish Nurse - part time. Winding up my nursing career which has spanned over 55 years. I also wrote a book and published it in 1994. It is titles "My Father's Will" and is about my years in PNG and the reason I went there. I have two daughters. One works on the Bridge in Port Huron (Home Security - use to be Immigration) and the other is a nurse and is Director of Nurses in a Psych Hospital in CA. My husband died in 1976 and my 23 year old son in 1977. As they say in Papua New Guinea
