Bernard's Story
I was an AFS exchange student at Clark High from Sydney, Australia. I lived with the Bres family. My host brother, Dana, also went to Clark.
School in Australia, especially in the final year of school is much more academically focused than the US, so I found the American experience exhilarating and fascinating. I most enjoyed Mrs Snyder's Drama classes, and appearing in the many plays that she directed. In one, The Long Christmas Dinner, she insisted I had an American accent, which I found very difficult!
I also loved Mr Kucan's College Rhetoric class and Judi Hale's Journalism class.
On my return to Australia I was lucky enought to gain university (college) entrance on my American graduation. I went to a Sydney university called Macquarie, gaining a B.A. Dip. Ed, with an English/Education double major. I went on to do another...Expand for more
diploma in Early Childhood Education, and worked in this field for around fifteen years. My great love of singing, guitar playing and music generally proved very useful with the children.
Eventually I retrained in Horticulture and now run a landscaping/gardening business on Sydney's North Shore.
I live on the North Shore and have a large rain forest garden that has been featured on several national TV shows.
I love to travel, and over the years have even revisited Las Vegas (in 2004). I love visiting Europe most, having visited, in some cases several times, Italy, France, Spain, England, Croatia and Turkey. I even attended an AFS exchange student reunion in Istanbul a couple of years ago.
My partner and I have been together for 30 years, and last year we celebrated this by spending three weeks in France, Paris and Province.
