Bernard's Story
After leaving Longwood I entered the Army, went to boot camp followed by a year-long rotary-wing (helicopter) flight school. I graduated in August 1969, and got married the day Woodstock started. My baby sister was irratated we (Pat Sabatella) and I would not consider taking our honey-moon there. In Sept. left for Viet Nam. While there I flew Huey's for the first 5 months, and was transfered to our gun company for the last portion, flying "little birds" (scouts) and Cobra Gunships. I came back in July 1970, was assigned to Ft. Wolters, Tx, where I taught basic helicopter flyng skills to FNG's (Funny New Guys). Was stationed in Korea after that for a year, damn near killed myself when we flew in to a 3/4 inch steel cable strung across a river near the DMZ. Came back and was assigned to Ft. Knox, where my wife nearly had a nervous breakdown, due to my frequent trips overseas (I was told shortly after arriving at Knox to prepare to go to Germany, to a base whose last occupants were the Luftwaffe....in 1945. After getting out, we moved to Albany, NY where I attended SUNY-Albany. Left there to move back to Long Island, lived...Expand for more
in North Massapequa, just off the Southern State Parkway. Worked for my brother-in-law until there was a falling out, started flying with "Island Helicopter" out of Garden City for a while, then I was made aware of an opportunity to return to active duty with a permanent assignment, at Fort Indiantown Gap, PA. Checked into it, got hired and we moved out, bought a a house in Hershey, PA, retired from the Army in 1995, got divorced in 2002, one of the most painful periods of my life. Got remarried to Sharon Peterman, a Pennsylvania girl, and we lived in Hershey until 2006, when we sold the house and moved to Mechanicsburg, just a short distance from Harrisburg. Right now I am planning to retire (more or less), move to San Francisco to help my daughter who is in med school (UCSF) with two little girls, 2 1/2 and 5 1/2. Plan right now is to move to Texas. we did,and it became a mess. So we decided to move back to Pa, fpund a nice house in Duncannon, just about 29 miles north of Harrisburg. 3 bedroom brick house, w car garage, etc,. on 1 1/2 acres. I am fully retired, health is so-so. I have fully retired, and am enjoying it.
