Beatrice's Story
Anxiety best describes my experiences at East High. Feeling as if I didn't fit in, yet doing my best to succeed despite stings of racism which felt like ostracism. Though there was an obvious snobbery by the many affluent in the school, the friendliness of certain students stands out in my mind and heart.
I am originally from a village in northern New Mexico where a unique Spanish dialect with archaic phrases dating back to the 1500s was spoken. For economic reasons, my large family moved from this rural homogenous area to Bingham Canyon, UT where my father labored as a miner. Several years later Kennecott expanded the mine which meant residents had to move out. ople as Stan Neering, Vicki Moreton, and others made me feel welcomed and normal.
If only if I had felt better about myself, I could have achieved academically at East High. It wasn't my lack of interest, but my lack of confidence. Resilience got me through and fortunately, I graduated. The best I could describe my experience was feeling marginalized.
Barely out of East High, I moved to Wash., D.C. where I worked for the federal government for two years. Later I graduated from the University of Utah, studied in Salamanca, Spain and received my Master'Âs in Library Science from the University of Arizona. After working 30 years as a librarian, I have retired and am loving it! It suits my introverted nature just fine. Plus I get to study what I want. Inter-spirituality, medicinal plants, local history and social activism interest me now.
I'm graced with two beautiful (inside and out) young adult children. My first husband was from Mexico and my present husband from Minnesota. We love to cross-country ski and travel. I visit family & friends in beautiful Utah, but New Mexico is where I feel most comfortable.
