Bernie's Story

Life William Bernard ("Bernie") Herpin, Jr., was born on August 16, 1943, in St. Petersburg, FL, to William B. Herpin, Sr. (Deceased) and Mary Louise Murrah (Deceased). He attended public and Catholic schools in Texas, Florida, and Louisiana graduating from Menard Memorial High School, Alexandria, LA, in 1962. Bernie received an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy and attended 1962 - 1964. In 1965, he was married to Linda Elaine (Bjornerud) of Colorado Springs. In August, 1965, Bernie enlisted in the United States Navy. After schooling and serving on the USS Simon Bolivar (SSBN-641), he was selected for the Navy Enlisted Scientific and Education Program and attended the University of Kansas. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy in January 1973. After service onboard the USS John Marshall (SSBN-611) and USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN-601) and at the Naval Submarine Training Facility (Pacific) with duty stations in New London, CT; Charleston, SC; Vallejo, CA; and Pearl Harbor, HI, he transferred to the US Air Force in 1980 and was assigned to the Headquarters, North American Aerospace Defense Command, Colorado Springs, CO. He retired from military service as a Captain in 1985. From 1985 to 2003, Bernie was employed at National Systems & Research Co. (NSR). Computer Resource Management. Linda and Bernie have three daughters: Tiffany Dawn, who married Paul Koch in March 2009, and they have two daughters, Katie and Caroline; Heather Nicole ("Nikki") who has three children, Dayne, Hope, and Coy; and Kari Ann, who was married to Joshua DeBurger in June 2000 and now lives in Lemoore, CA where Josh is stationed with the USN. They have a son, Connor Reed, and a daughter, Emma Nicole. Bernie is active in local politics and was elected to the Colorado Springs City Council in 2009 for a 4-year term. He was elected to the Colorado State Senate in 2013. College I was in the US Navy and was selected for the Navy Enlisted Scientific Education Program (NESEP). The Navy sent me to the University of Kansas where I received a BS in Aerospace Engineering and a commission as an Ensign in the US Navy. Workplace I retired from the US Air Force in 1985 and went to work for a small defense contractor headquatered in Colorado Springs: National Systems & Research Co. (NSR). I held positions as Senior Systems Engineer, Task Leader, Project Leader, Deputy Program Administrator, Project Manager, contract administrator, and senior configuration management analyst. In 2003, I moved to Lockheed Martin Information Technology as a senior configuration management analyst support the Global Positioning System (GPS) Master Control Station (MCS) at Schriever AFB east of Colorado Springs. Public Service I servered on the Colorado Springs City Council 2006-2007, 2009-2013. I was elected to the Colorado State Senate in September 2013.
