Beth's Story

First of all, born in wonderful Chilliwack....Here is my story: Started out in Grade One when I was five and very shy, at Chilliwack Central Elementary. My parents were from the farm, having moved from Alberta, to Rosedale in 1944 and they lived with my Grandma Whitney and Auntie Betty, on McGrath Road. (I wasn't born until 2 years later when my family moved into Chilliwack). My parents were older in years, not up to date with current fashions, sports, schoolmates behaviour or city ways in general. I was the only one out of four kids that was "city born" (Chilliwack, actually), with my two older siblings being 15 and 17 years older than me. My younger brother was 2 1/2 years older than me, but still quite a distance in years. My dad was 60 and my mom was 40 years old when I was born. Imagine what that was like. My growing up years met a daily challenge. My dad retired from work when I started school, while my mom went to work, at the General Hospital. Not a good thing, but I quit school half way through grade 11 at Chilliwack Senior High..(later taking College courses to complete Grade 12.) Married Ewald Nickel in 1965, (lots of students probably still remember his younger brother, Bruno Nickel) then moved to Kelowna in 1972 with two very small children and myself, as this marriage was dissolved. This is really when my new life began to take shape. I worked for 38 years at the best and oldest radio stations in town, now called "The Q" and "Power104.FM". For 36 years I was the Traffic Manager, which is a proud job of logging all commercials and programming before it goes to air, a job I thrived on. I then took on 2 more radio stations, and then two more...making a total of six radio stations, adding Victoria and Vancouver, using the Internet to transfer files, commercial logs and programming etc. The past 2 years, I worked at the Reception Desk for Q and Power, enjoying every minute, greeting people coming in, to pick up prizes and greeting various upcoming and well established music groups and solo Artists. These jobs turned into a 38 year Career -- Who knew!! ...Expand for more
I am also a full time member of the BCAB. (British Columbia Association of Broadcasters).Jimmy Pattison was my Boss. Married one of the "on-air" Announcers in 1985, which ended early in 2010. My two children blessed me with 4 grand children....2 girls and 2 boys, aged 15, 19, 23 & 28 years, I was a 39 year old Grandma, although I am disappointed there are no signs of great-grand children! (Out of my control, lol!) My son-in-law has been deaf from childhood, and everyone in their family knows ASL. I try, and manage somewhat, but often we resort to pen & paper! Just recently he acquired an iphone and can now text and sign while he's face to face with people on the iphone. What an opening for him! Sometimes I get my Sign-language and my other language, (German) mixed up while "talking". Quite funny, really. I've learned how different the deaf world is, and have a lot of respect and love for him. I've kept in touch with 3 of my classmates from Central Elementary and High School over the many years, (Becky Enns, Glenda Sims, and Erika Schepanowsky). and would like to hear from past classmates that remember me. I Hope to "beef up" my Photo Albums to include:Relatives, On Vacation pics, pics of me growing up, and more! I have never been notified of a Reunion, therefore have not seen or communicated with other past classmates. I always thought it was because I didn't Graduate from Senior High. Jimmy Pattison didn't finish school according to his Biography either! I did however, complete my schooling in the long run! I would really like to hear from kids that I went to school with, please! It would be so great! It's Official!! I'm going to Vegas for my 65th Birthday with my other two female cousins! Neat!! Now that I have been single for over two years, I'm making plans with my life. Here is an "ad-on"...I remarried in August 2014. We do a lot of travelling, which I have always loved...Every winter for 3 months in Hawaii (Big Island) is a real treat, as well as several long cruises into the South Pacific, New England, Caribbean and Europe.
