Beth Tyler:

CLASS OF 1970
Flint, MI

Beth's Story

Life Overall, life has been good to me. I've been married for almost 30 years, and have a teenage daughter. Other than that, it's been GREAT. LMAO Life has offered me many challenges that I've tried to take as opportunities to grow. I earned my PhD from the School of Hard Knocks, Class Valedictorian. My professional career has allowed me to learn many lessons. You may/may not recall, during HS I typed-for-$ many a term paper. BTW - sorry to those who didn't get their papers turned in on time; after all, I did tell you upfront that it was no money, no paper. Geez, I was only charging $1.00 per page, and that was before electric typewriters and wordprocessers! LMAO My first real job was at City Hall in Flint, where I started to work in the Fall after graduation. At that time I held the civil service test record for my typing speed; my aptitude scores were very high too. I actually skipped a day of school in my senior year to take the Civil Service Test – best move I could have made. Gainfully employed, financially comfortable, and moving up in life. The 70's were wondrous and somewhat wanderlust times for me. For a few years I lived in Shrewsbury, MA and worked in Boston, and spent week-ends on the Cape. After a few years in MA, I moved to back to MI, after realizing I had married the wrong person. Somehow, being in the right place, at the right time has been good for me. I’ve worked at the side of several executives and a few entrepreneurs in a variety of administrative capacities. Meeting some of the doers and shakers in the US health care industry opened many doors for me. For a few years, I traveled the US and PR starting up health care management type orgs. I've had a few "passions" that have taught me some valuable lessons. These passions are focused on today’s children, their education, health, and general well-being. ...Expand for more
Not willing to compromise my values and beliefs; my passion for the children has also caused me to resign from employment in public education – because I choose to speak-out, to protect the health of many children who were ill because of the very poor indoor air quality; caused by mold spores in their classrooms. I guess, the quiet, shy girl in high school left me long ago. I am now an older lady, young at heart, who is outspoken and opinionated. I'm confident life will offer me opportunities to make the best out of the many blessings I have and the networks I've made. As long as I keep moving forward - life won't ever pass me by. School My favorite teacher by far was Mrs. Yvonne Cox. Funny memories including skipping school, running out of the building with a teacher chasing after us. I was a quiet girl, but not stupid enough to stop. LMAO Craziest memory is when MLK was killed and all that happened in the hallways afterward. I wonder what other people who were there, think about those days? Workplace I traded the boardroom for the nursery, when I finally made the decision that I wanted to be a mom more than I wanted to be a boss. Not that a woman can't do both - but that'd be more work than I wanted to commit to. After 10 years of motherhood, I am now back to working full time in Flint, and live in Clio with my husband and 14yo daughter. Professionally, I've spent most of my time helping build health care/management style businesses. My current professional adventure focuses my time on the mission of "empowering responsible choices". I'm a busy pro-choice activist and successful administrator. My job allows me the opportunity to work with a diverse group of staff and clients. I'm not getting rich and going deeper in debt thanks to Flint's economy - but having a job that focuses on a mission I believe in is priceless.
