Beth's Story
When I was just a little girl
My parents cut off my arms and my legs
And drove knives into my heart.
"Now go out into the world
And make us famous," they said.
I tried as hard as I could
But demons were eating away
At my brain
So I had to drop out for awhile.
I grew back my arms and my legs
And ran far away.
But I couldn't get the knives
Out of my heart.
And the demons, Oh, the demons...

I was very messed up during most of my school years, having been molested by a stranger in a life-threatening situation when I was about 8.
I never quite recovered from that and spent many years pretending to be "normal" and trying to figure out what was wrong with me. I was also completely controlled by a narcissistic mother who had no clue that I was having such problems.
I managed to get through MSU despite anxiety, depression, social phobia and self-hatred, and even received a teaching credential. I tried teaching Art in Grand Rapids-horrible. I quit at the end of the year and never taught again.
I moved to CA in 1971, never to return to MI.
I finally went to physical therapy school at UCSF and worked as a PT for over 20 years.
I have been working on personal growth and healing my whole life. I spent years doing yoga and meditation and my yoga name, which I've had since 1990, is Shankari (Rise). My life has been a crazy journey of self healing and discove...Expand for more
ry. Medication has helped a lot.
I am divorced from Greg Rise and living in Aptos (near Santa Cruz) CA. It broke my heart to have no children, but I have finally gotten over that after living with a family who had 3 little girls.
I am now living on a beautiful 4 acre property with my tiny doggie, Rumi and with 7 other humans, 3 goats, 4 emus, several cats, dogs and chickens. We are in the process of building our own community and gardening.
Rumi and I go to the beach every other day, which is lovely. I got my first retirement check in May. YEA!
I have a best friend, Shirley, who is my soulmate sister and we are both 9s on the Enneagram, so we spend lots of time doing our personal inner work together.
I sometimes wonder whatever happened to Carole Kovacs and Carol Opalinski. I know that Hank Plante is a newscaster here in San Francisco, but I have never contacted him.
We had some pretty strange teachers back then. I do not believe in the public school system and would like to see a system that is based on cooperation and helping each other learn, rather than competition. Another possibility is that the kids in high school could be taught to run the school themselves with supervision. Then they would learn how things are managed. They could run the food service, the maintenance, the ordering of supplies, library, etc.
Thanks for reading this. How amazing that we can contact our classmates from the past this way. Namaste
