Bethe's Story

Still curious. . . Some years ago, I connected up by email with Sue and Mike Viets and lately with Sharon Koustmer. This was so wonderful, after many years away from LA and La Crescenta. Barry McCormick and his wife Peg remain close friends. After CV, I went to Occidental and planned to go into the Peace Corps, but did not get in. So, I went to grad school at University of Chicago and became an anthropologist. I have had my violin with me most of the time, and it's been fun to switch back and forth between exploring and performing. About 15 years ago, I left the big city for the coast of Maine. There's NOBODY from CV in Maine. Very strange to look at that Classmates map. Our neighborhood is like old La C...Expand for more
rescenta, the kids in the neighborhood seeming to belong to all of us. I like it that they run in and out of our houses and keep the adults loosely tied together. Also, it is affordable. I still sometimes cry when I'm out for a walk or a swim and realize that the ocean is right here, not a block from the house. Maine is not a place for "cool" people. That's been a big adjustment, because Chicago was so in-your-face and multi-ethnic and trendy. Here, people just kind of do what they want and stay somewhat detached. You need to be pretty able to generate an inner life to be happy. That's been my way for so long, it was a relief. But being so out-of-it as far as what's happening, well. . .that's still weird.
