Betsy's Story

Hello to "old" friends. I'd like to hear from you. My daughter and I are living in Colorado. We both miss the Bay Area, but have found a new home and great friends here. In case you were unable to come to the last SRHS reunion, I will catch you up a bit. I have a daughter, Natalie, whom we adopted from China in 1997. She is now 13 and a true joy of my life. Unfortunately and to my complete shock, my husband of 16 years, and Natalie's dad, decided he wanted to pursue an artist's life without wife or child. He left us at Christmas, 2008 and now lives in Italy. We are healing as best we can from this heartbreak and shock. We are active in CYT (Christian Youth Theatre -- google CYT Denver, we are in Parker) where Natalie performs in the musicals, and I create and sew costumes. We are rebuilding our lives, with the help of dear friends and family. I retired from a teaching career of 37 years. I miss teaching so much, Being in the classroom all those years was a complete joy, though of course, it had its challenges. These days, I volunteer in the classroom, still singing and playing my guitar with wonderful kids. I worked actively on the Obama campaign and that was a bit of a challenge in more-coservative Parker, Colorado. I took great pride that my grand-niece was chosen to introduce Mic...Expand for more
helle Obama when she visited Colorado University during the campaign. I left behind a wonderful book group, women friends who have been meting for 32 years. While I miss them terribly, all visits back to the Bay Area incude time with these dear friends. I have recently joined a book group here, and am enjoying that. Natalie and I are active in our church, singing with the choir when we can. (CYT rehearsals and classes keep us very busy.) The choir director is the choir director at the middle school she attends, and also for the high school she will attend next year. She has heard me talk so much about Byron Jones and we definitely compare Mr. Stroman to Mr. Jones -- wonderful, inspiring, adored by all! As I write I look out on our first huge snow. After all my years in either Marin or Contra Costa Counties, it is still strange for me to see so much snow. At least 14 inches fell during the night. School is cancelled for the snow day, which delights the kids. In closing, I would like to add how much I would like to hear from friends who attended SRHS. I hope I am remembered as one who was enthusiastic, had dear friends, was active and involved, and loved life. I have not changed in any of those ways -- just have added a few lines and gray hairs, and hopefully some wisdom along the way.
