Betsy's Story

Life I live in Mobile, AL after living in Baldwin County for about 13 yrs. I attended school in Robertsdale from 61-71 and then moved to Mobile in 1971. I graduated from John Shaw in 1973. I recenty completed working a 2 year contract job in February 2008 at Degussa Corp (name changed to Evonik Degussa) in the Procurement/Purchasing Department. Unfortunately, with the reorganization and downsizing of the company, there is a hiring freeze for permanent positions. I am now working for the new steel company, ThyssenKrupp Stainless USA as a Document Control Specialist and Buyer. We are located in Calvert, AL which is north of Mt. Vernon on Hwy 43. It is about a 45-60 minute drive one way. So I spend about 40 hours a month on the road. I moved back to Mobile in March 1972 after my father passed away. I had attended Robertsdale School for 10-1/2 yrs. Unfortunately, my mother suffered an emotional breakdown and so we were required to live with my Aunt Jane in Mobile. There were 5 children in my family and I guess my mother was over whelmed with the responsibility. Whatever, the move to the big city of Mobile was a major transition. I went from a senior class of about 200 to a senior class of over 1000 at Shaw High School. I was 15 and lost. Fortunately, I made friend 's with Gwen Stokes who lived a few blocks away from 5321 North Colonial Oaks Circle. We would skip school together sometimes and go to the beach. She was a majorette, Azalea Trail Maid and got me interested in attending Technique School of Cosmetology when I was 16. She got her license and I almost completed mine but I delivered my immaculate conception baby Kim in Oct. 1973. When I graduated from high school I was 5-1/2 months pregnant and not showing. So by the time I gave birth I was back in shape immediately and most people never knew I had ever been pregnant. I refused to marry the biological father because I 'had to'. Besides he didn't love me and I never wanted to hear him say he married me because he 'had to.' Probably not the best decision to make at 18 yo since it changed my life. I had planned to go to college and be a teacher. Instead I started working at Eckerd's Drug Store and Gayfers Wig Department downtown by Bienville Square. My best friend Gwen was married and had a baby girl and her husband, Randy Malpas, was the manager of Eckerds and got me a job selling makeup. I never pursued the biological father for child support and so in hindsight my daughter did without a lot of financial perks. I would do it different today. I married in 1977 to Clovis "Peewee" Hudson who was a star athlete from Vigor High School. We met through a mutual acquaintance from my karate class in 1974. We dated off and on but I had commitment issues. Then my mother fell ill again and tried to take my daughter away and so Peewee and I moved in together. We got married a few months later because of peer pressure from his elderly extended family at church. H...Expand for more
e was a great husband and is a great friend. We had a son, Jeremy Blake Hudson, born in 1985. We divorced in 1987 and I remarried a younger man and that marriage only lasted 3 years. Teenage girl's and step-fathers don't always mix well and Kim and Andrew definitely didn't. It was my fault for not observing his parenting style. So we divorced in 1990 and I have been single since that time. I chose to raise my children until they were grown and not allow any personal relationship compromise my relationship with my children. I am sure there are some guys who could have stepped up but I was disillusioned and distrustful. So instead my son's father stepped up and filled the financial void. Finally, my daughter is grown and has 3 children ages 16,10 and 6 yo. Her life has been a roller coaster and I try to hold on and provide stability for the children. I am happy, losing weight and getting back to my fighting weight or somewhat close to it. I would be content at 56 to be a size 8-10 and healthy. I am on the way! This year I am going to pursue Tai Chi and yoga. Something different....until then. School My first 10-1/2 yrs of schooling was attending Robertsdale School in Alabama which was located in a small town and had all 12 grades at one school. Kindergarten did not exist in the public school system. I don't remember all my teachers but I do remember Ms. Snyder, my 1st grade teacher, and Ms. Spence my PE teacher. After my father passed away 12/19/1970 my mother had an emotional breakdown and so some of her sisters would come and stay with the 5 Luther children and provide the support we needed. Unfortunately, it didn't last and we were uprooted on a Wednesday afternoon and moved to Mobile, AL to live with my Aunt Jane and her blended family of 5 children. So now there were 10 children living in a 3 BR 1 Bath home. But we made it work. I then transferred to Shaw High School in 1971 and graduated in 1973. From there I went to University of South Alabama and then went part-time over the years since I was working full-time to support my daughter born October 1973. Then I attended Spring Hill College and completed my certification for Paralegal Studies. I also completed my upper level courses for Communications. Now I just need to complete some of my lower level courses to complete my degree. I love learning new things and will be a lifelong student. Now I would like to pursue writing and massage therapy. I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right . The closest I came to being a teacher was when I started my own Marital Arts at Spring HIll College. I had several hundred students because I didn't use contracts and I wanted students to take the class because they wanted to learn and not feel trapped if they didn't have a passion for it. That was the way it was with my instructor Bob Kucera when I studied Tae Kwon Do under him.
