Betsy Schwarm's Story
Since mere days after graduation in 1977,
I've been living in Colorado dividing my time between various activities:
- working as a classical radio announcer/producer and classical recording engineer
- writing about classical music: ten books in print - see below for details
- giving pre-performance talks for the Colorado Symphony and Opera Colorado
- teaching music history at Metropolitan State University of Denver
- teaching skiing
- putting tens of thousands of miles on my road bike and
hundreds of thousands of vertical feet on my alpine skis.
My husband Rick and I have two boys (30 & 26 as of July 2020), one daughter-in-law, two year-old granddaughter, one Shetland sheepdog, and one kitty. The elder boy and his new family live here in town; the younger is in Bozeman, Montana.
If you'd like to read some of my classical music writing, do a Google search on the phrase "Classical Music Insights" or "Betsy Schwarm": both are my own websites. Classmates won't let me put the actual addresses here. The Betsy Schwarm site has not only writing samples but also two YouTube links you might find diverting.
You'll find me on Facebook, too. I changed my legal name when Rick and I married, but as I still use Schwarm professionally (having already established a reputation with that name), my Facebook page is under Betsy Schwarm.
I've published nine general interest books on classical music, aimed at the curious general listener, and one overall index of the series. Whether or not a person has music theory training, ...Expand for more
it's still possible to listen to and enjoy great music, with a bit of guidance, which I seek to provide. My books are:
- "Classical Music Insights: Understanding and Enjoying Great Music" (2011)
- "Operatic Insights: Understanding and Enjoying Great Music for the Stage" (2012)
- "More Classical Music Insights: From Mozart to Muhly and More" (2013)
- "Classical Music Insights: If All Else Fails, Play Mozart" (2014)
- "Classical Music Insights: Getting to Know Ludwig" (2015)
- "Classical Music Insights: A Star-Spangled Survey" (2016)
- "Classical Music Insights: Bach and Beyond" (2017)
- "Seasonal Music Insights: Vivaldi and Much More" (2018)
- "Classical Music Insights: Overview and Introduction" (2018) - an index to the series
- "Classical Music Insights: Viennese Visions" (2020)
All are available as e-books and in paperback format from Amazon, and in paperback only from Barnes and Noble. You can also find over 200 of my classical music articles on Encyclopædia Britannica online. By the way, the index, which has not just lists, but also samples of my work and an overview of my professional background, is all of $5 in paperback and $1.99 as an e-book.
When I'm not writing, listening to great music, or walking the Sheltie, I spend a LOT of time on my road bike, or, when weather permits, on the ski slopes. Rick and I met through skiing: he's coached me to become an expert mogul skier and I've taught him buckets about Mozart and Company. We think it's a fair trade.
Hope all is well!
