I was raised with a dad, a mom and a brother, too, These are a few of the things I used to do. I played tag and kick the can, played hide and seek and then I ran. I played mommy and daddy and baby, too, Oh my how time flew. I picked wild strawberries as I hiked thru the fields, Spring ,summer and Fall until I got chilled. Lightning bugs, melon and homemade ice cream, Then the comfort of my bed as I began to dream. I laid on my belly for a cold drink from the spring, I lived for today not knowing what life had to bring. I had piano lessons, singing and learned to sew, All meant more to me than you will ever know. I walked in the woods with leaves crunching, Apples, pears and plums off the trees for munching. lackberries for jam cobbler and pie, I LEARNED THAT LIFE IS NOT ABOUT JUST I. I had early morning walks in the garden covered with dew, I smelled honeysuckle and saw morning glories of vivid blue. I chanted ,"Im a pretty little Dutch girl " while jumping rope, I played jacks and hopscotch and learned if you want to win don't give up hope. I made a dam in the creek, then waded around, I caught crawdads in old window screens and watched them wiggle when they spilled out on the ground. I won a 4-H prize for my cornbread muffins, I spent time with family and learned about unconditional lovin. I walked to the neighborhood country store the my friend Sandy, To get a 5 cent candy bar and a bag full of penny candy. I waited for the school bus while watching Captain Kangaroo, I was never bored I always had something to do. I played dolls with the girls and baseball with the boys, I didn't have or need a lot of fancy toys. There was no such thing as a computer or a wii, I watched black and white television without a fee. Sunday mornings were for church then family dinners, Back to church Sunday night, no reason to be sinners. I jumped the piles of clippings while dad cut the grass, When he said stop, I did I never did sass. I was taught to mind my manners and sit up and listen, I helped clean the house until it glistened. They say it takes a village to raise a child, The neighbors watched that I didn't do anything wild . I didn't have much stress, not much of a care, The only thing better is if you had been there.".
