Betty's Story
(I probably should update this-- I wrote it when I first came on to Classmates.com -- oh well, it's all true and in a couple of days, I will be writing the NECMC August 2011 newsletter.)
Quick stuff-- I'm in the middle of writing the New England Country Music Club newsletter and I need a break from it-- this past meeting got a little tense with some disagreements between the members. (I am the NECMC president--I've been on the board for around 30 years)
Anyway, I'm pretty happy-- I've done some things that were great experiences for me. I'm broke-- but, so is mostly everyone else!!!
I graduated, went to work- started off at Polytop, Inc- but spent the bulk of my years at A.T. Cross (BEFORE they went off to China)! I worked many various jobs in the company from molding to machinist, to trainer, to videographer for training films.
While working at Cross, I returned to school for radio and television production and graduated in 1993. I married Eric Phillips -October 8, 1994.
I left A. T. Cross in 1996.
In 1998, I was on a local radio station in Woonsocket with a show named O'Kay's Corral-- Eric was working for Digital Semi-conductor, but when Intel took over they cut the Digital guys loose... he joined me in 1999 as co-host and then with his own show "THE" Theme Show. It was pretty cool, for any of you who know who Chris Young is, he contacted us when he was about 15 years old.
Chris sent us a demo and said he was a "budding" songwriter and wanted to know if we would play his music. Once we heard this ...Expand for more
kid we just knew he was a cut above the ordinary- he came to Rhode Island in 2004 and we introduced him to the Blackstone Valley and to our Internet Radio audience.
Chris appeared for a show at the Uxbridge, MA VFW where everyone fell in love with him. He truly is a pleasant and respectful person. A year or two later he became Nashville Star and more recently held two songs on national charts. "Gettin' You Home" (the black dress song) and "The Man I Want To Be."
We're pretty pleased that we got to know him before he became famous....anybody want to buy the recliner he slept in???
;^D
Eric is from Waterbury, Connecticut and has been a country musician for over 30 years. Together we formed a band (1993) named Durango Mango. The name is a derivative of Durango for the country music we play and Mango for the Jimmy Buffett influenced material.
We still entertain today, only our drummer who has been with us for the past 11 years is in Woonsocket, RI and we moved to central Maine in 2006. When we are in southern New England we still work together, but as of tomorrow (8-6-2010) we will be interviewing a drummer for Durango Mango "north."
Here in Maine we entertain in retirement villages and assisted living facilities-- There are fairs and clubs and campgrounds that we will be playing in this summer.
We do write some original music and I have had some of my poetry published in Rhode Island and Maine-- I'm happy.
That's about it in a nutshell-- I've got to get that newsletter out!
Stay Well Everyone,
Betty
