Betty's Story
Life
After graduation I attended a summer session at the St. Louis Institute of Music, and earned a Beginning Piano Teachers Certificate. I really didn't want to teach piano (much to my Mother's disappointment) so I applied for work at Indiana Bell, and was a Long Distance Operator there.
On my first one week vacation I flew to California to visit an aunt and uncles in Orange County. This was in the days when planes had to refuel twice (Kansas City MO and Boulder CO) to get from Chicago to Los Angeles. I fell in love with the Pacific Ocean the minute I saw it and went home and turned in a transfer to California. I returned to stay in January, 1948. A job was waiting as a Local Operator (the local citizens got me saying "Operator" instead of a dial tone - yep,"Ernestine") During a brief loan to the Construction Department (poles, cable, wire, crews -- I kept records of all of them) I was introduced to a lineman, Larry Hund, and married him in 1951. We adopted five children, three girls and two ...Expand for more
boys -- more children available than adoptive parents at that time.
In later years I went back to music and became a Church Organist and Choir Director. The organ was challenging, and took a lot of study (it's not the same as playing the piano), but I loved it and church music in general. So music did become a very important part of my life.
I am very lucky that all my kids live fairly close by. Larry died in 1997, and four years ago the old homestead, high on a hill in North Tustin, got to be too much of a financial drain to take care of, so I sold it and moved to a condo in Lake Forest. It's a roomy, very livable place, and on a lake, with views of the lake from living room, kitchen/nook and master bedroom. The lake reminds me of all the happy family times I had as a kid, and they were usually around water -- lake or creek.
I still get back to Indiana once in a while, and love to visit.
In my wildest teenage dreams, I never imagined I would be so content and happy at this age.
