Bevan's Story

I am probably best remembered as the smallest player on the senior football team when I was in grades 12,and 13. Other than that I was a shy, quiet kid except during the mass shirts-skins basketball games played by the boys cross-court at noon hour during the winters. Graduated University of Manitoba in 1966. Earned 2 Canadian Association of Amateur Oarsmen gold medals, rowing with Hamilton Leander 135 pound eights, at the Canadian Henley in Canada's Centennial year. Graduated from London Teachers College in 1970. Established a career working with mentally challenged youngsters, at CPRI in London, and in Huron County, earning a programming principalship in Wingham in 1978. Married Annette Van Pypen in 1980. Father of four, Marlaine in Winnipeg, Bethany in Vancouver, Geoffrey in Ottawa, and Tabitha now back in Toronto. Have 4 grandchildren, 3 in the 'peg, and 1 in the nation's capital. Retired from teaching in 1992 due to problems with chronic depression. Helped establish both minor and adult soccer in Wingham during the 1990's. Current interests include modelling Canadian historical aircraft, reading, and Taoist Tai Chi. My wife Annette underwent orthoscopic surgery to repair a calcified chuck of cartilage in her left knee in late September 2011. Our daughter Bethany underwent surgical repair to an acl in early October, and I completed the family trifecta with total knee replacement surgery on my left leg at the end of October. Skiing was out for another year. Finally in mid February 2012 magic happened, and a family of four toured our house, and after three days we accepted their offer to purchase. Panic set in as we had only 6 weeks to pack and find rental accommodation. After viewing apartments for a day, selected from goggle searches we settled on a two bedroom corner unit in downtown London. Proceeds of the sale were well short of what many city dwellers could expect, but well within reason for a stagnant, small town market. March was spent packing boxes, and boxes and boxes. Our oldest Marlaine was down to help the last few days, and SENIOR MOVERS did a great job packing our furniture and setting large pieces up in the apartment. Have managed to attend a few Knights 2012 playoff games, seen Hair at Theatre London, found the Central Library, found a Tai Chi location, and Annette has found a Yoga studio . Everything but Tai Chi is in walking distance of our apartment. April was spent unpacking what we had diligently packed the month before. As I still build plastic models of cars, aircraft, and motorcycles I had a large inventory of completed models to return to their display cases, and 'new' models, still in their boxes to find storage space for in my closet. May was basically a month of visiting , traveling to Vancouver to visit Bethany, meet her new partner Andrew, meet his...Expand for more
parents, and see more of Vancouver. Bright and early, after a week in Vancity, we boarded the ROCKY MOUNTAINEER TRAIN to travel through the Coastal Range, Cascades and Rockies. Due to the CP rail strike our travel the second day was by bus, which gave us the opportunity to get off the bus and explore a bit. The RM had the most fun, because they were relieved of most of their service duties. One day of GOLD service is entertaining, but enjoyed the opportunity to walk about on the second day. Other visits during the summer of 2012 included Calgary, Canmore and Duchess, Alberta to visit Tabitha, my brother Dwight (A.B. Lucas H.S. 1968), and my brother in law Larry and his wife. September and October 2012 were spent emphasizing arm and shoulder strength and flexibility exercises in preparation for Reverse Shoulder Replacement surgery performed on November 7,2012 at St. Joseph's Hospital in London. My recovery is progressing slowly, but as expected. The recovery period is to be at least 12 weeks. Another winter may pass without skiing, even if it is only Boler Mountain, and the London Ski Club. Thank heavens for all those taxes we've all paid which fund our health care system. 2013 has been a consolidation year as far as right shoulder strength. Annette spent the winter and early spring, and fall semesters taking two half courses in art studios taking a survey course, and a print making course, through which she learned a deep appreciation of the difficulties in etching. I reached by objective mid December, getting back on skis for the first time in four years. Perfect morning at Boler injuries, with no wipe outs. Annette's father Jon passed away in May, so their was a bit of a reunion for her family for the funeral and wake. On a happier note our daughter Bethany married Andrew Weichel at the UBC boat house. A happy event for them and us, with two other daughters in the wedding party, and my brother and his tribe attending. Ottawa has been visited about 3 times in the past year, to visit Geoff, his partner Tamara, and son Liam. Both my brother and brother in law from Alberta visited this fall, so Leaf fans rejoice, hell may have frozen over, as this was the first time they visited in the same season, without a family crises involved. 2013 began with another visit to Ottawa to see our grandson and his parents. January will end with my left shoulder being replaced. Another reverse artificial joint. To prove insanity is inherited from children, our oldest daughter Marlaine took a lateral transfer in her workplace. This only required her and her husband Stephen, moving household, car, 3 children, on dog from Winnipeg to Vancouver (for wedding) to Whitehorse, Yukon for what may be only a year. Fortunately they are enjoying the move. Insanity, and cats are inherited from your children!
