Beverly's Story

I have lived in Calif. since 1973, and in Santa Barbara since 1984. After Sunset I went to Lewis and Clark for a year, and then spent 3 years at Portland State. I graduated with an English major and a Secondary Education certificate. I taught 2 years in Oregon, one in Hillsboro, and one in Portland, then answered an ad by a school district near Sydney, Australia. I spent most of a year teaching in Sydney, then went to New Guinea for the last months of the year.New Guinea was my favorite place to teach because the kids were so interested in everything that was offered them, and the location on a tropical island with simple villages was so amazing. While in Australia, I heard about teaching in Japan. yle. It was another great experience. I was there 18 months. When I returned to the U.S. in 1973, I moved to San Francisco, where one of my college friends lived, and I have been in Calif. ever since, I worked 2 years at Japan Travel Bureau, booking Japanese tourists into Calif. hotels and tours, then decided to go to law school. I was accepted at UC Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, and attended there from 1975 to 1978 Since graduation, I have worked in the field of Workers' Compensation for over 35 years, including positions at the Cal. Court of Appeals, County of Santa Barbara, and as a Cal. State Workers; Compensation Judge. I married my husband, Jim Shipley, who is also an attorney in Workers' Compensation, in 1983.We had the chance to move to Santa Barbara in 1984, and have raised our two children in SB: Kellen Shipley, born in 1986, and Kaitlin Shipley, born in 1987. We are late in the field of grandparenting, but hope we can do that soon!
