Beverly's Story
After graduating from Englewood I immediately enlisted in the US Army. Seven days after my 18th birthday I was on my way to Fort Jackson, SC for basic training (BT). Everything was new to me, i.e. leaving Chicago, flying on a plane to an unknown city, and meeting different people from multi-cultural backgrounds. BT was very strenuous and challenging. However, I found that I enjoyed Army life. I enjoyed the discipline and structure and the camaraderie that I felt with other soldiers. ans do not have. Anyway, I served 22 years before I retired. During my military career I got the opportunity to go overseas to Germany, Denmark, Austria, Korea, and Greece. In 1979, at Fort Hood, TX, I met and married my husband (also a retired veteran) - we have been married ever since. In 2000, I started working with the Department of Veterans Affairs. I retired from the VA as a Veterans Service Representative in 2013., with a total of 35 years of federal service (including my military time). Now I'm fully retired and trying to enjoy life.
