Beverly's Story
It's been a long, long time since I have been in touch with my high school friends. When I graduated from Gage Park, I attended Western Michigan Universtiy in Kalamazoo, Michigan where I graduated with a BS degree in Secondary Education with a major in English - taught HS English for several years, then started a family, had 2 sons, Greg and Brant, and became a stay at home mom. After Greg and Brant were older, I decided to go back to work and found a marketing/sales job at our local paper, the Kalamazoo Gazette where I worked for 25 years until I retired in July of 2009. In 1990, my husband Gary died after a brief illness. In 1992 I met a wonderful man, John, and we were married in 1995. John has 4 children, so there are 6 altogether along with 9 grandchildren. My family means the world to me and I love them so much. Anyone who remembers me knows I could never retire :), so I have started my own marketing consulting business and have been busy. Technology is wonderful since I can do the majority of my work from my computer and cell phone! Still love the people contact too. Also a volunteer marketing chair for...Expand for more
our local chapter of SHRM (Society of Human Resource Management),March of Dimes and the Kidney Foundation. My son Greg lives in Westmont, IL with his wife so I do come into Chicago more often - it is only a 2 hour drive, but still not thrilled about driving there.
I really appreciate having good health. My son Greg was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 2 yrs old, at 36 his kidneys were failing and he needed a transplant - in 2008 I donated my kidney to him which is working very well. Also 3 months later he received a pancreas transplant -he is doing great and has no more diabetes! I am doing great too so it was a win-win situation. All transplants were done at Northwestern in Chicago - great team of doctors. They sent me home the next day after the transplant - and I have not had any problems which I am so thankful for. Through the encouragement of my author friend, Greg and I are presently working on a book to tell our story of our journey through all of this - this is an exciting venture. So this is a short summary of what has been happening with me - hope to hear from some of you so we can get caught up :)
