Beverly's Story

School I remember going to Corsicana High for the first time in 9th grade. It was a struggle being the only black person in most of my classes. I loved Geometry and other maths, but I didn't always get a fair deal. I also loved choir and Mr. Haedge until I found out he was messing around with the girls in my class. High school was fun and challenging for me. I enjoyed Chemistry with "old smorange head" (don't remember his real name) and I adored English with Ms. Slater. Ms. Slater was fantastic and I think she was the reason I excelled in college literature. When Corsicana High intergrated and there was a big "walk out", I remember being in the middle of it and on the front page of the newspaper in a red shirt and rolled-up jeans. I never really had a problem with the white kids I went to school with. I think they had a problem with me and somethings really were unfair. B...Expand for more
ut, friends like Kim Wyatt made it easy to get along because he was real and honest and kind. The best thing that happened in high school was winning the Collins Scholarship which helped me to go to college. College I was glad to get away from home in college. I knew the main reason that I was there, but I was determined to meet people and enjoy life. So my first two semesters, I went to every party I could go to. After getting stone drunk for the first time and almost getting caught at a pot-party by the police, I realized that I had had enough of that kind of life. I manage to stay on the dean's list though. After getting ill with hepatitis and missing a semester, I graduated from North Texas State University with a 3.2 not quite cum laude in 1976 after completing 146 hours credit which included psychology courses (my original major) with Bachelor of Music Education.
