Bill's Story
I received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. I graduated with a B.S. degree in General Engineering in 1971, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army (Field Artillery). After completing Airborne and Ranger schools, I spent 3+ years stationed in Friedberg, Germany, then returned home to Savannah, GA. f my summers wading the rivers of northern Michigan chasing the elusive, monster brown trout there. Somewhere toward the turn of the millennium, I started running again... so much so that I completed 21 marathons in a rather short period. I continue to run today, but admittedly age has slowed me down just a bit. Somehow this obsession morphed into my second career. I have been the operations director for the Detroit Free Press Marathon for the past 11 years... a race that draws some 27,000 runners each October. I love what I do, and don't have any plans to retire anytime soon. I have two great sons... Andrew in Ladera Ranch, CA and Scott in Manasquan, NJ. I'm happy that they have successful careers and wonderful families of their own. I've been married to Karen, who I met while volunteering for the marathon, for 16 years. I look forward to staying in touch and to many more days in the sun... Bill
