Bill's Story
Workplace
Left Glasgow HS and moved to Spokane, WA the summer after I graduated when my father retired. I attended college for a couple of years before going into the Coast Guard to beat the draft and not go to Vietnam. I saw places like Tahitii, New Zealand, Antarctica, Australia and even ended up in Vietnam with the CG. I ended my 4 year military hitch and went back to Whitworth University in Spokane, WA. and got BA degree in Physical Education ('73). I worked at various jobs and went to Portland, OR. where I attended a 1 yr grad program at Multnomah Bible College. I stayed in Vancouver, WA for about 4 yrs as a Deputy Sheriff. While there I attended the U of Portland night school and received my Masters of Science Degree in Criminal Justice ('78). I also got my private pilot's license the same year. I left Vancouver in 79 and joined the US Army to fly helicopters as a Warrant Officer. I retired in 1997 as CWO-4 and moved to Oak Harbor, WA. I got married while in Korea in 1982, and have two children, a son who lives in LA and a daughter in Mt. Vernon, WA. I flew for Era Helicopters in Alaska where I flew folks from the cruise ships and landed on glaciers during the summer. In the winters I flew to oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico out of Lousiana & Texas. I left that job after 5 years because I was gone from the family too much. I worked for the Island County Sheriff's Office as a Corrections Deputy (jailer) for Island County Sheriff's Department on Whidbey Island, WA from 2002 until I retired in 2011. I'm now enjoying retired life and workin...Expand for more

I'm on facebook so come look me up and drop a note so I know what you've been up to. I'm trying to reestablish contact with friends from the past, so don't be shy to contact me.
Military
I joined the Coast Guard in 1966 when I still had a choice and to stay away from the draft. I was assigned to an Ice breaker out of basic training, and went on on "Operation Deep-freeze 68" where I sailed on a south tour to Antarctica before being assigned to Vietnam and 82' Patrol Boats for off shore patrol. I extended my tour to try to get an early release from the military. Well, they approved the extension in VN but disapproved the early out, so I stayed in Vietnam for 17 months. I ended my CG tour in Seattle as a 40' boat coxswain at Captain of the Port, doing search and rescues (SAR) around the area. I really enjoyed the Coast Guard but got out to go back and finish college and get my BA and MS degrees. I joined the Army in 1979 to fly helicopters and fulfill a lifetime dream to fly. I flew UH-1 huey for 7 years and UH-60 Blackhawks for 10 1/2 years. I went to various places like Korea, AL, Germany, NC, AL, Thailand, Saudi Arabia & Iraq for Dessert Storm with the 82nd Airborne. I served two tours teaching as a flight instructor pilot with the Army Aviation Center at Ft Rucker, AL (one with the UH-1H & one in the UH-60). I retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 in 1997 after 22 1/2 year of military service and moved to WA State.
