Bill's Story

I remember home room with Miss Berg! I also remember there were a number of students in home room who I had been in classes since Hampton Elementary School. Custer was extremely crowded that 1970 year and our graduation ceremony was held at the football stadium. Each student could have only 2 guests. Hopefully I'll recognize some faces on here. I always wanted to be a nice guy when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right. I always wanted to be a designer, architect when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were right. Blow of steam? Yikes, here in New Mexico there is no steam! Actually I'm working on my house so I can sell it! My steam blowing days are over. I retired from teaching after 22 years at New Mexico State University! I wasn't wild at all at Custer that I remember. I know I blended in with the crowds of the hallways! If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have a Starbucks Mocha lite, my iPhone, and my daily devotional reading. to be able to deal with the day-to-day. Never really had heroes, although I have very fond memories of my parents. I moved from Milwaukee to attend Kansas City Art institute. My senior year I spent in London, England studying typography. I returned with a BFA in Graphic Design and a post-grad certificate in Advanced Typographic Design from the London College of Printing. Anyway, I eventually got a tenure-track teaching position at New Mexico State University. I did a small stint in Canyon, TX of which I have wonderful fond memories. I moved from Canyon to Ann Arbor, MI to attend grad school and obtained my MFA in Graphic Design. That got me my job in NM. Time sweeps aways 22 years and I retired in Dec. 2010! Now I want to sell my nifty big adobe house and outside studio and either move to AZ, CA or CO. Anyone want to visit me in CO when I win the HGTV 2011 Green Home Giveaway!? The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Roy Schutlz, because he was a fine good friend since Mt. Tabor UCC and Edison JR. High!. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Roy Schultz, because he was a fine good friend from Mt. Tabor UCC and Edison Jr. High!. This house allows 2 dogs and 2 cats. I never was a cat person until the chair of my committee at Ann Arbor said I needed a cat! Probably the guy I thought I was going to be with the rest of my life at my tender age of 19 wasn't met to be! I've met a number of guys over the years and time has told me that my parents marriage was the best. Nothing compares. I would enjoy seeing all my teachers if I could. They were patient, kind, and we always knew our boundaries with them. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel some major windows and add on a big smile. My dream home would be again, the HGTV 2011 Green Home Giveaway in Stapleton, CO. If I won $100 million, I'd give half of it of it to United Church of Christ, then spend the rest on myself, family and family. My first dorm experience was at KCAI. one semester was enough! Although I could always see my studio dept. from my window! In London I lived in sorta a hostel for students. Breakfast every morning and a healthy walk to school. My roommate was from Hong Kong. Again a dorm in grad school, one semester as I recall, with a roommate from Korea. He had it figured out as a Engineer manager grad student. Every night he solved class problems via phone calls with his classmates. To be happy? These days it revolves around AZ, CO, CA and Mexico again! I've been twice to Mexico City, with a visit to Oaxaca and some other villages. But southern CA has drawn me a number of times as a perfect place. My ex-partner and I have taken many trips there and visited with his family and...Expand for more
those urban trappings around San Diego. My first crush....hmmm..... who knows. He was pretty wild and was a bouncer in a bar, lead a wild life! A couple girls I had a crush on in jr. high and high school. One got happily married and the other just continued to be so glamourous! My current age is 58. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be an undefined age. I was so completely wrong. Not working hard now except on the house. Well most of that is done. I want to consolidate and not take care of 1/2+ acre of property. I achieved my career aspirations! I taught hundreds of students, and even seen a few who were nieces or nephews of my former students! My best friend would tell you I'm stubborn, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as very friendly. hmmm... I don't know. These days I'm in work clothes and I like Shaper, Dr. Martin's, and slip on shoes! I wear Levi's and T-shirts in summer here and the same with flannel or something like that in fall/winter. My weirdest job? Probably working for Pinkerton's in Milwaukee while an undergrad at UWM. I got to work at a lakefront condo downtown where some of the elite families of Milwaukee lived such as the Pabst name. Every night, I worked the graveyard shift, I had to eventually go on the 15 or whatever floor roof and make sure no one was there! it was neat to see the city from that vantage point. Second to weirdest? In Kansas City at a print shop. It was so hot in the prepress room that the glass thermostat actually broke! 3rd weirdest job? I was a painting conservator assistant in Texas and I got to see some very famous items such as Jim Bowies knife, Sam Houston's saddle, and monster paintings from the state capitol of Austin! One do-over? Hmmm...I can't really think of any. I ventured into quite a bit with work, education, travel and relationships. I don't know, take a 3rd trip to Europe? I guess I grew up and became more of an easy going extrovert in a crowd! I volunteered time in my mid-twenties at the old Milwaukee County Infirmary, an intermediate care monstrous Victorian era facility that no longer exists. I got a CETA job eventually there and work as an Occupational Therapist aide. I got to learn and enjoy a ton of people who were basically institutionalized all their lives. Something like "One Flew Over the Cuckcoo's Nest" scenario. There I got over my shyness and gain insight into people's unique personalities. Teaching college students and working with faculty also helped! I share my home with my ex partner, which I find educational. I have a couple nice Nambe pieces for time served at New Mexico State University. My diplomas are packed away. Getting my job in New Mexico was a great source of pride. It was my goal to move back to the southwest after leaving TX to attend grad school. I did it! In 10 years, I hope to be 68. I'm going to get there by conitnue eating healthy and get to one of those states I find wonderful. I'm thankful for Scott Kodousek from way back at Edison Jr. High finding me on the internet! I had a happy reunion with him a number of years back and it has been fun to hear about his stories and mutual class mate. My first job was at Duthland Dairy on Hampton, where I got paid $1.70 to $1.75 zn houf. What I remember most about it is the beautiful Dutchland Dairy girls and a few good looking guys. This is easy. I always remember a round ceiling florescent light bulb in my memory. But why? I asked my mom years ago. She said above the table where she changed my diapers...was the florescent light bulb! But my grandparents then too as they lived nearby in Seward, Alaska. I've been fortunate enough to have made numerous trips back to Alaska to see extensive family up there and discover my Alaska Native heritage.
