Bill's Story

Departed Baltimore in Sep 1965 for college; haven't lived there since and only returned infrequently for visits. B.A. - Geography 1970, and M.P.A. - National Security Affairs/International Relations, 1990, Met Kathleen Anne McFadden in Akron, OH, where we attended college and married Kathy in Oct 1972. Kathy is a very talented French teacher and still maintains good fluency in the language. She taught full time until we married and the frequent relocations of life in the military made that more difficult, so Kathy transitioned to volunteer work and tutoring. When our children came along Kathy went full time mom. As they got into high school she took on a variety of short-tour office work and then returned to substitute and full time teaching. Hard to believe we're coming up on 50th anniversary next year, but time flies when having fun. Two daughters, both now in their 40s and married. Beth lives in Fargo, ND, with husband Tom, but no grand kids. She works in administration at Sanford Hospital and Tom is a professor at NDSU. Kristin lives just five minutes from us in Warrenton, VA, with husband Kirk and our granddaughter, Edith ("Edie," born 28 March 2017... which in itself is a long story). She is lead in web presence at George Mason U., in Fairfax, VA, and Kirk splits his time between home-dad to Edie and working for Old Bust Head Brewing Co., in Vint Hill, VA.. Since leaving Baltimore right after graduating WHS and then U. of Akron, OH, I spent most of the next 40 plus years moving around the US and world as an officer in the USAF (Active and Active Reserve), then a DoD civilian, and finally as a "senior mentor" consultant. Retired from the USAF in the rank of Colonel in 2000, retired from civil service in 2008, a...Expand for more
nd did consulting gigs for the next 8-10 years. Now semi-retired and (mostly) working from home as a "telecommuting paid pontificator." Nursed Kathy through two battles with cancer, in 1990-1991 and again in 2011-2012, both with successful outcomes and continue to learn lessons that put life in realistic focus. Still avidly interested in anything to do with railroading and active as a model railroader, e.g., check out my YouTube channel, "Cal's Passion Beyond Scale." Recently resumed my hobby of home brewing and taught Kirk how to brew, which led to his employment at OBH. Active with our local church and concentrating on our ministry to aid and support Afghan, Iraqi and Kurdish immigrants, which is connected to my involvement in Veterans For American Ideals (see their website for info). Also spend time working as a volunteer to educate legislators and the public about the threats posed by climate change (i.e., 1. it is real, 2. it's not a "normal" cycle, and, 3. we are causing it.). Otherwise, in spare time I enjoy classical, Celtic, Paul Simon, and world music; and, reading theology, science (mainly physics), history, and geography-geopolitics. Military service whipped me into physical shape and I went on to become a middle-distance runner and marathoner in early 1980s, but some health issues starting in mid-1990s made me transition to rigorous low-impact indoor fitness routine... anyway, even today I'm much less the pudgy lump I once was at WHS. So, that's the basics of what I've been up to since WHS. Along the way I came to appreciate the wisdom of John Lennon's remark "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." Well, if you've made it this far and still want to visit please contact me via email.
