Bill's Story

Life By the spring '80 I had transferred to Biola University where I eventually graduated ('83) with a BS in Recreation & Camp Administration. The other camp managers I worked with had previously graduated from the same department. Their inspiring lives greatly influenced me. In the summers of '81 and '82 I worked in some unique camp managing waterfront programs of water-skiing, sailing, windsurfing, and marine sciences in Rhode Island. I never laughed so much before. Have you ever seen a prized marlin hanging from a flagpole or a 8' shark suspended above a tent doorway or a counselor's bed set afloat on a dock? Those Jewish campers and staff had a sense of humor. One time I had to face-off with a Jewish mother from the Bronx who had been called to come pick-up her son from camp because he was being sent home for repeated misconduct. That was a long night of saying "no" a thousand times. After college I worked in Newport Beach as a sailing instructor, and commercial truck driver afternoons & evenings to pay down the student loans. On a concert tour stop in Seattle in '84, I met my first wife, Pam. We hastily married a year later and moved to Bigfork (with the gracious & generous assistance of Ron & Carol Pierce) to work with the youth at Swan Chapel. I managed to squeeze in a brief visit for the 10th year BHS class reunion, some school bus driving, skippering an old America's Cup boat for charter groups, sailboat racing, and sailing instruction for the University of Montana. The following winter of '85-86 was a bit overwhelming for Pam. Her Seattle-born dreams of living in a picturesque log cabin were shattered when the reality of living in one in the winter -- a real wood stove and real mice!-- shook her up. Things didn't work out for us in Montana. Pam landed her first good paying job back in Seattle. An anonymous gift received in the mail from locals of the Bigfork area enabled me to buy a truck and move our household to WA. I've always suspected the kind and generous folks from Swan Chapel were behind that. Unknowingly, we moved not far from Mike & Bobbi Wolstein, Mike Caufield, Dan Jordt, and others.…small world! I worked as a Program Director for the King County Boys and Girls Club in Wallingford, did some salmon fishing, and eventually settled down to doing bldg. maintenance and progressed to working as ...Expand for more
an Operating Engineer in a couple of Seattle's high rises and hospitals. I volunteered on a Parks & Recreation Board in my eventual hometown of Lynnwood, WA and was greatly blessed by the arrival of my son in 1993 and daughter in 1989. Full time work plus other moonlighting work I took on were not enough money for Pam and thus she urged me to meet up with a neighbor who wanted me to run for City Council. I could have taken better advice, but that being said --the experience and education was a once in a lifetime opportunity. In the mid-1990's, Lynnwood's City Council was probably one of the most rewarding political jobs a guy could ever want. I threw my name in the hat, stood on a few thousand doorsteps, and-- thanks to God, a deceased parent's pension, some 30+ volunteers & private donors-- Bill Hubbard came out of the 1993 primary and general elections spending less, yet on top of the other--more noble--contenders. Imagine that. In the ten years since I've hit my fair share of bumps in the road, but life goes on. Now I live and work in the "Heart of America" --Kansas City, Missouri. I am happily remarried now--Patty is my precious gift from God--and doing my best to maintain the long-distance relationships with my 2 children, now 11 and 15 years old. In the coming months I hope to propose and proceed with the launching of a waterfront safety / sailing program for students at Blue Ridge Christian School. God willing, we shall set sail next spring! College • College Biography: In the Fall of '77 I went to college in Salem, OR and did more student government work than studies. By early '79 I had enough of school and was preparing to phase out college for a while. In early May, an Australian school mate joined me for a week's break from college to tour so. CA It was sooooo very good to get away from school. During that trip I interviewed for a children's camp management job. Two week's later I got the job offer where I spent the next 2 summers working with over 4,000 children from the metropolitan areas of southern California. I was hooked. By the spring '80 I had transferred to Biola University where I graduated ('83) with a BS in Recreation & Camp Administration. The other camp managers I worked with had previously graduated from the same department. Their inspiring lives greatly influenced me.
