William (Bill)'s Story

July 2017 Hello, EHS '67 Classmates! I hope you are all happy and healthy. After graduating from EHS, I briefly attended Everett CC before Vietnam caught up with me, as it did with many of us. In early 1968 I learned that I would soon be drafted, so I abruptly joined the US Air Force, where I spent 4 years in the Cold War, working with ICBM's and mainframe computers (Strategic Air Command) while attending college during my off-hours. After graduating from EHS and completing four years in the USAF, I earned a BA in Economics, UW (1974). At that point I received a call to reenter the U.S. Air Force as a commissioned officer and B-52 pilot or navigator, but decided to remain a civilian instead. I continued my education, earning an MBA, Seattle U (1978); and later attended Seattle U School of Law. I also did some doctoral study, but finally decided I'd had enough. I've since been an executive with Boeing, General Dynamics, Textron, IBM, Washington Mutual, and Infor. I now have a management consulting firm, whose clients have included Intel, Schlumberger, Weyerhaeuser, Premera Blue Cross, Avista, and others. Thankfully, I've stayed reasonably active, healthy, and happily married to Becky (CHS '67), an R.N., since 1968. We have 3 successful children: twins, including a boy (now a dentist) and a girl (now a dental hygienist); and a younger son (now an IT professional). As of this date, we also have 6 beautiful ...Expand for more
grandchildren, two of whom are starting college. We have lived and worked all over the U.S., including Denver, CO; Santa Barbara, CA; Portland, OR; Dallas/Fort Worth, TX; St. Louis, MO; Boston, MA; Providence, RI; Washington, D.C.; Trenton, NJ; Los Angeles, CA.; San Francisco, CA; Sacramento, CA; Huntsville, AL; Knoxville, TN; Atlanta; GA; New York City; San Diego, CA; and more. I've been to all 50 of our United States, and although I've often appreciated other places, the natural beauty and diversity of WA always brings me back here. Still, I must confess that we would really like to move back to the Sunbelt someday. There is a lot to be said for enjoying your own swimming pool 9 months out of the year. We went to the 1977 EHS reunion, but I was traveling for work in 1987 (Washington, D.C.) and 1997 (Los Angeles). However, we attended my wife's '97 (30th) and '02 (35th) Cascade High School reunions. We've also attended both the EHS and CHS 40th, 45th and 50th reunions, as well as a few smaller gatherings held over the years. I have not lived in Everett for many decades, and hardly recognize the place these days. However, I do remember nearly all of you 1965-1969 EHS folks and have some fond memories from those bygone years. Please take care of yourselves and send an e-mail note sometime. I/we would love to catch up. I sincerely wish you all the very best, and many happy years to come. Cheers! Bill Hughes
