Bill's Story

Hi, I was hoping to see a lot of you at the 30th reunion this year, but I understand that there is not one planned. I've only been to one, I think it was the 10 year. I live in Bedford, VA and rarely get up north. The last 30 years have flown by. I got my BSME from Virginia Tech and worked in the defense and communications industries for 18 years. I started a design company (Stone Mountain Design, Inc.-SMD) in 1997 and then a OEM (Stone Mountain, Ltd.-SML) in 2002. In this latter company we designed, developed, manufactured and subsequently marketed a line of military and public safety communication devices. By 2006 I was ready for a break and sold SML to a Canadian firm. My entire workforce remained intact and they have a ten year lease on my manufacturing facility in nearby Huddleston, so I feel comfortable that the products and people are secure for the foreseeable future. As part of the deal, I am bound to a three year consulting contract with the new company to develop next generation products. I still have SMD and maintain offices in Huddleston, VA, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We continue to do product design as well as supply chain management, quality control, project management, new product industrialization, etc. for US and European companies doing business in the Far East. I live on a farm and over the years have raised Nubian milking goats, Black Angus, and of course dogs and cats, although I sold off the goats and cattle several...Expand for more
years ago when the businesses became too demanding. I never did get married nor have any children, I guess time just slipped by on that one. If any of you are ever in the area, you are more than welcome to stop by and visit as long as you like. Since they don't let you put contact information on here, you can email me at bjennings at stonemountaindesign dot com. Update - September 2012 - Funny the difference that four years makes. Another reunion coming up. I'd like to make this one, but the timing is bad. Interestingly, on 01Oct11 I bought back SML from the bankrupt Canadian firm that purchased it five years (to the day) previously. I'm back to running two companies - Don't know what I was thinking on that one. I'm still in the process of re-organizing SML and undoing five years of incompetent Canadian administration, but actually the turnaround has been dramatic - It just has taken a ton of my time. As for SMD, for the past three years we've provided the mechanics and electromechanics for a mesh network radio system deployed in coal mines. We also provide a MSHA rated battery, charger, speaker microphone and antenna mount for the program. It's been an interesting project and I feel good that we're providing something that may actually help save lives in the event of a mining accident. If I can get up there for this 35th reunion, I'll see some of you I'm sure. I wish everyone good health and happiness in the years ahead. Bill Jennings
