Bill's Story

I am writing this in place of my husband, Bill. Bill and I were married in Augsburg in April 1963 (yes there was a baby on the way) - he was able to receive his diploma, thanks to Mr. Cook, who insisted that Bill return and finish up the school year. Bill joined the Army that summer. Took his basic at Ft. Dix, NJ. Went on to be trained in the communications field. After 3 years, Bill left the Army and went into working Civil Service working in several of the communication area. Some of the places he was stationed was, El Paso, TX; Ft. Huachuca, AZ; Panama, back to AZ, then accepting a position in Worms, GE. We were so excited about going back and living in GE. We spent almost 10 years there, allowing for our two daughters to enjoy visiting a lot of countries. In 1989, Bill decided it was time to head back stateside. He accepted a position here at (Augusta) Ft. Gordon, GA. Here he retired and after a few months, decided he was ready to go back to work. Had a couple jobs around town but decided he wanted to work overseas a little longer. He spend a little over 2 years in Afghanistan, then on to Kuwait. Yes, it was difficult being apart, but this was a decision we both made. Twice a year, Bill would come home for vacation, our anniversary and my birthday. Over these many years, we have gained 4 grandchildre...Expand for more
n and 3 great-grandchildren - what a blessing. In Sept 2011, Bill came home for 3 weeks - returning to Kuwait in early Oct. In February 2012, he called early one morning saying he was on his way home and for me to get him a doctor's appointment. The first of March, we found out he had kidney cancer - April the kidney was removed - chemo followed - in Sept & Oct he went in to cardiac arrest. It was determined there was nothing that could be done for his heart because of him still fighting cancer (it had spread). Mid Oct, Bill went for a CT scan - a couple days later, we were told there was nothing else that could be done. Two week later, Bill went Home. My only prayer was that God not let him suffer, and God heard my prayers. He passed quietly with family by his side. This has been a very difficult 3 years for me. We had a very long and beautiful life together. I tell everyone that he is just sitting on the other side of the Jordan River, writing love letters in the sand, waiting for me. I still have a lot of work to do here for God - so hoping He will let me stay a little longer. I'm sure most of you probably think I've lost my marbles writing so much. But wanted everyone to know about the man that stole me heart so many years ago and is still holding tight to it. May you all be blessed. Shirley Wyatt Jones
