Bill's Story
Life
Well, after graduating from B.H.S. in '83, I went to Northeatern University in Boston to major in Computer Engineering. While on my second co-op job assignment
(by the way, I'm a big advocate of co-op programs in general), I was offered an indefinite co-op position by my employer, C.S.P. Inc. of Billerica, MA. This alleviated any pressures associated with having to search for and find a job during my subsequent co-op work semesters. C.S.P. Inc. promised me a job when I finished school, based on my performance during my initial co-op assignments. Upon finishing up at Northeastern, I proceeded to work at C.S.P. Inc. until 1994, at which time I made a huge life-altering career change. As some of you might know, I always enjoyed listening to music. Once I started playing guitar (during my years at B.H.S.!), I developed a real passion
for playing, performing, and eventually teaching guitar.
In early 1994, I lost my dad to complications caused by emphezema. A few weeks before he passed, we were having a long chat about various things when he said something so profound that I never forgot it. He said that he had been a laborer (a truck driver more specifically) his whole life, and that he couldn't stand his job. He then told me that if I had an opportunity to make a living doing what I love (which in my case was music), then I ought to seriously consider doing so, because in his opinion, "there is no substitute for waking up every morning and actually looking forward to going to work."
Those words had quite an impact on me, as I was going through some soul-searching regarding my career at that time. So, on April 15, 1994. I left my job as Diagnostic Engineer at C.S.P. Inc. to become a self-employed freelance guitarist/musician. This might seem completely insane to a lot of you, and truth be known, in a lot of ways it was insane! However, I did have a lot of guitar-related income at that time. So i wasn't completely diving off into the deep-end so-to-speak. I was...Expand for more
playing in a working cover-rock band at the time (Slushpuppies 1992-current), and I was also teaching guitar lessons at Performance Music Center in Woburn, MA (1988-current). In fact, this coming September will mark my twentieth anniversary as a guitar instructor at Performance Music Center. Over the years, I've also been involved in various recording projects as a hired guitarist, engineer/mixer, producer. Each studio project provided
its own unique experiences, most of which were fun and enjoyable. Like any other job, sometimes there are strained relations, hurt feelings, confrontations, etc. However, for the most part, it has been challenging, rewarding, and a lot of fun. Currently, I still teach
quite a bit (6 days-a-week at Performance Music Center), but I don't gig as much as I used to, although I am involved in more bands (Slushpupies, Bill & Glenn's Acoustic Adventure {along with B.H.S. class of 1990's Glenn Develis}, and a tribute band called Toolfist).
Do I regret my career change back in 1994. Not really.
Sure, the grass is always greener on the other side, and I'm sure I'd be making a lot more money than I do as a musician. However, anytime I get a little stressed about
finances, I think about my dad and what he said about the importance of loving your job. That always puts a smile on my face! I'm no millionare, but I own really nice little ranch in a quiet neighborhood in Chelmsford,
which I bought back in 1993 when it was quite a "buyer's market". I make enough money to pay the bills and "make ends meet". I love my house and its location (1 mile from the intersection of Rt.3 and I495.)
Just like back in High School, I still am an avid sports fan. I love watching and rooting for all of the professional sports teams from Boston (Although the Bruins can't seem to pique my interest)! I've also become quite a fan of professional golf, especially since Tiger Woods joined the Tour in 1996. I also enjoy the occasional round of golf with old friends.
