Bill's Story
After graduating from high school, I attended Colorado State University for 2 years, then transferred to Northern Arizona University. Married Laurie WALLER (class of '70) in 1971. We loved Flagstaff! I completed my B.S. there, then worked for Babbitt Bros Wholesale Division for 2 years and decided I didn't want to do that the rest of my life. Did 2 years of graduate work in mycology (fungi just wasn't that much fun - decided I didn't want to do that the rest of my life), then got into the dental hygiene program at NAU, graduating with a 2nd B.S. in 1979. Had children Ehren, Geoff, & Jennie while at NAU; Ryan, Erich, Scott & Rob were born in Oregon, where I practiced dental hygiene for 10 years. I had my mid-life crisis at about age 37 when I decided I didn't want to be a dental hygienist the rest of my life. We moved to WA in late 1989 and I went to work for the state of WA as a (child) support enforcement officer (SEO) on January 2, 1990. I'm still there as a supervisor and Laurie works in the same office, also as a SEO - we plan to retire in 2016 (assuming the current president doesn't take us down to ruin)..
While we lived in Oregon and later in WA, I served 21 years in the Coast Guard Reserve (1981-2002)...Expand for more
. Completed MBA at Washington State University in 2004 (just for fun!). We have hosted 5 exchange students in the past 12 years - 3 from Germany, 1 from Kazakhstan, 1 from France (right now!). I was into triathlon a few years back, but I'm a terrible swimmer, and running is tough on old knees so cycling is what I do now for exercise. Other interests: backpacking (Eagle Cap Wilderness in June 2013), raised-bed gardening, trips to Europe with Laurie (4X) & 9 grandkids (3 in AZ, 5 in Boise, 1 here in Kennewick). Checked off one of my bucket list items in 2008: reached the top of Mt Rainier 3 days after my 57th birthday! Although we like being empty nesters, we've had wonderful experiences hosting our five European "daughters"; we wish we could keep the French girl we have now! I have fond memories of friends at TPHS - have had next to no contact with any of them though. I still remember lunch-time cribbage games with Dan Sauers & Kevin Slotta. We were real geeks then! (lol) And the girls I had crushes on - Susie Bower & Terry Johnson (double sigh) - I was such a shy guy back then. It's all okay - Laurie & I are a good match - 41 years together & we're still in love! Looking forward to hearing from old classmates!
