Bill's Story
School
I transferred into the morning Kindergarten class of Miss Marcoux for the spring semester in 1959. I understand I was a bit of a handful. I was a little o9ver anxious to fit in and got a little rough, or so I recall being told. I believe Miss Marcoux transferred to Riley after the 1960-61 school year. In first grade I had Mrs. Morris & Miss Cummings. 2nd grade was Mrs. Walker's and third grade was Miss Reeves. She retired after the 1963-64 school year. I remember the multiplication table races that year. I think Patty Klimczak always won. In 4th grade we had Miss Nidetz and 5th was Mrs. Lindenbaum. She did a nice job of teaching us how to diagram sentences. We had a book reading contest that year. The results can be seen on the bulletin board in the class picture. Tom Reed and I got into pretty intense with that competition. In 6th grade things began to change. Construction began on the two story west wing in preparation for expanding the school to include 7th and 8th grades. We had Miss Goldberg and went to Springfield for our class field trip. Miss Goldberg married that summer and as Mrs. Koch I had her for home room in 7th & 8th as well as for literature. Among several teachers Mr. Fisher and Mr. Hall standout as pretty good examples of good teachers and good people. In retrospect Mr. Boav impresses me as a fine phys ed teacher. He made us work and gave us a broad introduction into various sports and other athletic disciplines. In 8th grade we traveled to Galena for our field trip. It was sometime during this period that Larry Orr and Don Glasco gave me the moniker of Sir Rederick. I guess it was the red hair. High school was a big change. After going to school with about the same 25 kids f...Expand for more
or 9 years we got hit with a class of 1,000 at TTHS. I remember Ed Bulanda being a pretty good guy along with Bruce Chacuno when we were freshmen. Mrs. Hodson impressed me as a German teacher and it was in her class that Irv McCoy and Charles Williams branded me with the nickname of Cowboy. Years later I ran into Irv on the campus of Purdue Cal. He still called me cowboy. We had a pretty good bunch of guys at lunch period during junior year; Paul Patterson and Chuck Warren from Emerson among others. I moved to Hammond and finished high school at Hammond High (HHS). I still had the purple and white and the wildcats to cheer for. Mr. Lundgren in physics and Mr. Pecher in math did a good job in getting me motivated. Mr. Carroll and Mr. Binkert in world history were also pretty good. I went to Purdue Cal. I took the 5 year plan. Scientific German did me in, in spite of Dr. Ade's ability. I substituted 4 semesters of French for the 1 semester of German I needed to meet the foreign language requirement. I played baseball for 4 seasons, with some pretty good players including Gary Ridgely, Kevin Mitchell, Cleve Hall, Steve Toth, Rod Weingart, Nick Rencich, Blaise Lucas, Ed Repko among many others. I managed to graduate in '76 with a degree in biology. I remember Dr. Tseng doing a good job teaching genetics. I remember Dr. Peloquin and the Ecology class' trip to the dunes. He told the class that a tree was a certain species and was contradicted by a student. Then he erroneously identified a woodpecker as a red-headed variety when it was the red-belled variety. I didn't have the heart to set him straight as he seemed so embarrassed from the first case. After graduation, I guess you could say the rest is history!
