Bill's Story
After high school I went to the Naval Academy, but after 2-years decided the Navy wasn't for me if I was going to reach my goal of becoming a pilot, so I transferred to the Univ of Maryland and enrolled in Air Force ROTC. After graduating I was commissioned and went to pilot training at Reese AFB in Lubbock, TX for 1-year and received my wings. This is also where I met the "future" Mrs. Smith--Brenda. From there I went to Fighter Lead-in Training at Holloman AFB, NM. After spending 3-months training at Holloman I moved to Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ and learned to fly the A-10. After 4-months of training at DM I went to my first operational assignment in 1986 at Eielson AFB, Alaska, where I stayed for 4-years. I also married my wife up in Alaska. In 1990 we were assigned to Homestead AFB, FL where I flew the F-16. In July of 1991 my son AJ was born at Homestead and we stayed ...Expand for more
there until 24 Aug 1992, when Hurricane Andrew came to town and relocated us to Moody AFB, GA. My Daughter Krista was born at Moody making her a Georgia Peach. I spent 4 more years at Moody flying the F-16 until I was assigned my first staff job over in Incirlik AB, Turkey. After 2-years in Turkey I came back to the states and to flying when I was assigned to Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX flying the T-38. After 3-years at Sheppard I moved on to Beale AFB, CA and kept flying the T-38 in support of the U-2 program. After 3-years in CA we moved back to Sheppard AFB, TX except this time I was flying the T-37. I did that up to June of 2006, when I retired from the Air Force and became a civilian contractor for the AF on Sheppard AFB. We currently still live in Wichita Falls, and plan to for a while. My son just graduated from College and my daughter is graduat next May.
