Bill Sutherland:

CLASS OF 1967
Borden, ON

Bill's Story

Life As a military dependent of course I've had the opportunity to travel throughout Canada and Europe. During these times although one may not have liked the constant moves I did in fact appreciate all the experiences gained over time. CFB Borden can best be described as my nurturing years as I was there for grades 7-13. Something rare for a dependent to be in one location for so long. I do remember though that my father had to go away for a year, so that the family could stay in Borden. Once High School was completed I worked for a year, but did not see anything bright on the horizon, so joined the Canadian Forces and graduated as an Officer in June 69. I've enjoyed my life so far while having a tremendous career in the Forces and having the opportunity to see most of the world. I was single until age 45, whereupon I obviously met my match and found a partner to share my life with. It was an instant family of our three girls with two step daughters who were aged 12 and 6 at the time. As of this present timeframe of 2017 oldest daughter has two daughters and a two sons. The youngest has a daughter and a son. Retirement for Patricia and I has afforded us the opportunity to travel, zone in on our golf prowess and of course spoil the Grandchildren. Unfortunately now at this time I have to mention that I've lost a love of my life, in that Patricia has passed and so Daughters and Grandchildren will now be my priority. Military Joined the Canadian Forces in 1968 and graduated in June 1969 and immediately posted to 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment (The RCR),in London, ON. Spent the first six years there and did the usual things as a young officer. While with 1RCR I had the opportunity to serve on two United Nation's deployments to Cyprus in 1970 & 1974/75. From London I was transferred to serve a three year posting as th...Expand for more
e Unit Support Officer with the 48th Highlanders of Canada, a Primary Reserve unit in Toronto, ON. My next assignment was to CFB Gagetown, NB, with the 2nd Battalion, The RCR. After a four year stay in Gagetown I found myself in Germany with 4th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Headquarters as a staff officer. After this very memorable posting I was returned to Canada to National Defence Headquarters (NDHQ) in Ottawa, ON. Spent almost 12 years there in various staff appointments and then found myself on what was suppose to be my last posting back to where I commenced my career in London, ON, as the Regimental Major of The RCR. This was a definite highlight in my life. I should have retired in April 2002, but the Retirement age at that time was under discussion to be increased from age 55 to age 60, which in my book was in my favour. I asked for an extension and they not only granted it but decided in time to also promote me to Lieutenant Colonel. On promotion I was transferred to Corner Brook, Newfoundland, in the capacity of Commanding Officer of a Primary Reserve Unit, namely the Second Battalion, The Royal Newfoundland Regiment. The job was very challenging but tremendously enjoyable. The people of Newfoundland were fantastic. I'm now retired, after some 39+ years of service to Her Majesty and Canada. I can attest that retirement to date has been great as I get to travel and spend a lot of time with the Grandchildren let alone playing a lot of Golf. If anyone finds themselves in the Nation's Capital and can track me down do so and pay a visit. Unfortunately now at this time I have to mention that I've lost a love of my life, in that. Patricia has passed and so Daughters and Grandchildren will now be my priority. Pictures First - Granddaughters Second - Patricia and I Third - Granddaughters Fourth - Heidi, Patricia, Tanya
