Bill's Story
Life
Some may remember me as Billy. I had a sister, Donna, Who graduated a year later in 1976. After graduating I worked at the LA Zoo just to kill some time. I joined the Navy in 1976 and got out in 1980. I was on board the USS Ranger CV61, WESPAC79. Some knew me as Toasty. I then joined the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1980. I've been there ever since (29 years).
Didn't get married until I was 27. Have 2 kids, 1 of each. The last one graduated from high school in 2005.
I as married almost 21 years. Wife died in Sept. 2004.
I stay pretty busy with work and play. Still into golf. I remember the FHS golf team of Terry Chan, Doug Burpee, Sal Barron, sorry if I don't remember others. I'm into swimming, biking, running, (triathlons) also. Also enjoy water/snow skiing, kayaking and just about any other out...Expand for more
door sport.
Military
I joined the Navy looking for experience to become a firefighter later in life. I was to young at the time to join the fire department. I went to "A" school and learned to arc weld, gas weld, pipe fitting, sheetmetal layout and fabrication. I also learned firefighting and damage control techniques. Once on the ship (USS RANGER CV61) I became the ship's locksmith. I was also on the ship's fire party. We were the best in the 7th fleet and earned the "DC Award in 1979.
I was assigned to "R" Division. I went through ship's major overhaul in 1977 in Bremerton, WA and met a lot of great people there. WESPAC79 was a great time: the PI, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Korea, Thailand and Japan. Let's not forget our wreck with the Liberian oil tanker.
Now a fire investiggator with the Los Angeles Fire Department.
