Bill's Story

College Done a few late nighters doing homework after attending night classes at Indiana Vocational Technical College. After getting my A.S. degree, I also continued my education with a class or two at I.U.P.U.I. as well as receiving specialized training in areas such as automation, vision, robotics. Workplace Moving from a cube to an office? Are they kidding? What a backwards concept! That's old logic talking. I use to have a office and traded it for a cube in the 'cube farm' back in the '90s. Most of engineering at Valeo Sylvania works out in an open atmosphere with low cubical walls. Sometimes the noise from other people is unbearable! My office is 200' by 400' with enough space for 100 other engineers with space left over. I think I've done alright for myself since the early days of my youth cleaning 'Hulda's Cafe' on weekends. I've been here 31 years already and I guess I'll be here for life. I've seen greener pastures on the other side of the retirement fence, but I just haven't been able to escape to it yet. Engineering life has been good to me here. I've recently hung up my electrical engineering hat for one in optics and now I spend my days playing with (testing) lights of all sorts. I have a dark room, a laboratory, a garage, and two other rooms where I spend most of my time, so I don't see much 'cube' time anymore. I often wonder if I made a mistake by not following my father's footsteps in law enforcement and I wonder how my life would have been different today...ummmm....something I guess I'll never know. I know that I love helping others and it's helped me earn the respect of many fellow associates and I know that's a good thing. Life is never boring here. It's amazing to think about some of things we have to do here to prevent people from putting something together wrong. How would peopl...Expand for more
e decribe me? I guess that depends on who you asked and what day it was on. I'm just like everybody else. I have "happy" days and I have "get the hell away from me" days. Hopefully, I have more "happy" days than I do the other. I'd like to think that I'm easy to get along with, once you get past the hard time I like to give everybody when they first talk to me, then I just smile. Of course this only applies to people at work who always want something from me, and they want it NOW. At home I'm just a precious, loveable fella ;) My dogs don't lie, you can call them and ask 'em. Around the Farm -- We bought a little over 6 acres of mixed ground a few years back, just South of Seymour a few miles, so the wife and I decided to design our own house. We built a beautiful house, with an acre and a half pond located a short walking distance so we can sit on the front porch and enjoy the view. We just love it in the country. We have our zoo of pets, along with all of the frogs and fish in the pond and other roaming critters (deer, ground hogs, herons, Canadian geese, squirrels, stray cats, and a snake or two), so there's always something to watch or do. There's never a dull moment at our place. Should you see me around the town, down the street, or on the homestead, honk, wave, yell, moon me, or do something and I'll do my best to say hey. I enjoy talking to people so don't be afraid to speak. You can always find me at Valeo Sylvania in Seymour. If you can find the main phone number, call it, then search for me in the directory. I'm there, really. If you read between the lines you can also contact me at Bill'dot'Wheeler'at'valeosylvania'dot'com. Hopefully that won't get edited out of this story. If you've made it this far, thank ya for reading my story. I've tried to keep it fairly short, but informative. See ya, Bill
