Bill's Story

Life After high school, I attended Eastern Illinois University for a semester before leaving to party with friends in Southern Illinois. Before I knew it, I was married and divorced and married again, new father of a 3 year old. I tell you, that's the only way to go through a pregnancy. I didn't feel a thing. Next I was a police officer while attending the University of Georgia. One day when I went in for a haircut and before I knew it, I found myself in Navy boot camp. I hadn't a clue about how I got there, and it was ten years before I figured out how to get out - put on a Chief's uniform and they will figure you are old enough to retire. While they were happy to let me retire, they weren't comfortable with paying me any money. Oh well. I went to work for an insurance company, who quickly recognized my genius and put me to work catching crooks. From there I went to work for a law firm helping the crooks. What a country. I retired from the law firm under the same plan the Navy had offered - no money. We traveled around the country for two and a half years in our motorhome until the price of fuel made that unfeasible. After that party was over, I woke up one day and discovered that I was the Director of Security and Surveillance for a couple of casino cruise ship companies. That was a blast and I did that for a couple of years, until the Russian Mafia wannabes that owned the first company imploded and the owners of the second company started fighting over the profits. From there I wound up divorced and went to being a private investigator. I am mostly retired now, I do work as a mobile notary public, performing weddings, divorces (go figure) and notarizing documents for loose change. I have now (as of 2018) been married for almost 10 years to a wonderful woman from Wales. We travel overseas at least once a year to the UK to visit friends and family, and usually take a side trip somewhere for a few days before coming back to Florida. This year our side trip took us to Budapest and Bratislava; we have been to Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, all around Ireland, my old stomping grounds in Ger...Expand for more
many and Prague in the Czech Republic. And,,, In 2010 I published a book, called Flyby, as an Amazon Kindle eBook. It contains a lot of my life as a military brat, my love of old airplanes, some reincarnation, time travel and espionage. Check it out. In short, life has been good to me. School Being a military brat, I went to 11 schools in 12 years. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't do it any other way. For example, remember that miserable pain in the tuchus that you sat next to one year? He or she wasn't there the next year. Great system. But seriously (snicker) I got a fine education on three continents that resulted in my getting two degrees mainly by taking tests, as I had less than two years total college class time. And I saw firsthand the geography and culture that most people only see in books. A look at my communities will illustrate the different places I went to school. Military I joined the Navy at the ripe old age of 26. Yeah, it seemed like a good idea at the time. After boot camp and navigation school in Orlando I reported to the USS Hoist, a rescue and salvage ship stationed in Little Creek, VA. While I was not particularly fond of the assignment, I did learn far more about navigation than I would have had I gone to a bigger, more comfortable ship. I also had staff duty with Commander, Amphibious Squadron Four (ComPhibRon 4) and made Med Cruises aboard the USS Nashville and USS Guam before departing for London, England. I joined the staff of Commander, US Naval Activities, United Kingdom (COMNAVACTUK) in the spring of 1989 and thoroughly enjoyed that assignment. I made Chief Petty Officer along the way, with a total time in the service of 7 years, 9 months service when I was promoted. My last assignment was aboard the the USS Saratoga in 1992. I went from being the Operations Officer in London to being the head janitor in charge of 12 janitors on the Sara, I got out at the ten year point, and while I have some regrets about not staying for the retirement, I did get out with my sanity intact, or nearly so. I did forge some fine friendships that I treasure to this day.
