Bill's Story

After high school, I attended Long Beach State. After the spring semester 1965, I decided to take a year off to work and make some money. I went to work for General Telephone on a temporary basis to make some money. Unfortunately, I had forgotten all about the draft. In October, I was invited to go play Army by my friends and neighbors. I went to Fort Polk, for Basic Training. After advanced training, I volunteered (mistake never volunteer) for Airborne School to learn how to jump out of perfectly good airplanes and Army Ranger School. After 2 tours in Viet Nam, I came back to General Telephone (now GTE), in 1968, again with the intent to save some money and then return to school. In 1970, I married Barbara Costello, a 1966 graduate of Saint Paul High School and we moved to Whittier. I went back to school at night and graduated in 1973 with a B.S. degree in Electronic Technology (ET). I stayed with GTE and was promoted a couple of times. I went back to school after being told that a technical degree was not what GTE was looking for long term, I graduated from the University of Redlands with a Degree in Business Administration in 1986. In addition to working at GTE, I was an Adjunct Professor, Golden West College, School of Engineering Technology; Westminster, CA. In 1989, GTE was consolidating Corporate Operations to Texas and my job was moving to Texas. We checked on the availability of park benches to sleep on and dumpsters for food, but unfortunately they were all taken. So we moved to the Dallas Fort Worth Area in Texas. We have adapted well to Texas. In 1993 my group was assigned the project of developing a Cable Television implementation strategy for GTE, we completed in 1994 and started the implementation. In 1994 GTE offered a retirement package and I had a job offer from a vendor from the CATV project. I decided to retire from the "temporary" job at GTE in 1994 (after almost 30 years) and joined General Instrument Corp. as a Senior Sales Engineer. Barb allowed me to take one day off so I wouldn't get used to retirement. In 1997 I took over the Applications Engineering and Sales Support group for the West Area which included everything west of the Mississippi including Asia Pacific. In 2000 Motorola and General Instrument merged. While in Texas, I also was a Visiting Professor, University of Wisconsin - Madison, Dept. of Engineering - Professional Development for 6 years. In 2004 three of us from Motorola joined the Asia Pacific Team at C-Cor Broadband Corp. We were responsible for new business development primarily China. In 2007 I moved to the Applications Engineering ...Expand for more
and Sales Support Group. C-Cor was purchased by Arris the same year. In 2010 Arris offered a retirement package and I retired again. With GTE, General Instrument and C-Cor I had the opportunity to travel all over the United States and the World including: Europe, Asia Pacific, Central and South America. After 6 months I got bored with retirement and joined Corning Cable Systems Hickory, NC as a Senior Account Manager in 2011. After a year I retired again. I have formed my own Telecommunications Consulting Firm/LLC and work when and for whom I want. Barb decided to go back to work when we got to Texas first for a Dairy Queen Franchise Holding Company and then moved to Michael's Arts and Crafts Corporate Accounting Department. Barb is still working and has moved to Radio Shack Corporate Accounting and now to Gamestop Store Accounting. I figure I worked the first years we were married now its Barb's turn. We have 2 children: Mary-Beth, 39 and Jay, 37. As the kids got older, we were involved in East Whittier Little League, Whittier Softball and Whittier AYSO Soccer. Mary-Beth attended Texas A&M University and graduated in 1996 with Degrees in Science, Wildlife & Fishery Management, and Secondary Education (5 year Plan) she wouldn't listen to me that there was not a draft. Mary-Beth has now completed her Masters in Science and Education and working, slowly, on a PhD in Education. She currently is an Administrator in the Alief School District in Houston but is moving to Cypress-Fairbanks School District which is closer to home She has 2 children Maren 11 and Liam 8. Maren is an 8 year cancer survivor; she was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she had just turned 3. Thank God for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. Jay graduated in 2000 from Sam Houston University with an MBA majoring in accounting and became a CPA and CFE. Jay is a Partner at Buchanan Clarke & Schlader LLP a Forensic Accounting Firm; he recently relocated to Atlanta, GA and opened a new office. He resides in Alpharetta, GA with his wife, Allison, and 3 boys; Payton 7, Landon 6 and Talon 4. We enjoy traveling to Houston and Atlanta to visit our kids and grand-kids, and going on cruises. Barb shops and I play golf; I get my money'™s worth on the golf course by hitting the ball a whole bunch of times. I'™m also an amateur woodworker and make a lot of sawdust. We love Texas and have a bumper sticker that says "œI Wasn't Born Here, but I Got Here As Fast As I Could" We enjoyed the 50th Class Reunion and hope they will have a reunion for 55 years, we aren't getting any younger.
