Bill's Story

Life Hello! I graduated from Abraham Lincoln Senior High School in 1963. It's difficult for me to believe that this happened over forty years ago! I now live in Poway, California, with my wife, Marianne, and my favorite cat, Sweetie. For over 30 years, I was a primary care pediatrician. My first two years, I was a pediatrician at the US Naval Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan. For several years, I worked in Orange County, California. In August of 1986, I was able to return to San Diego. I've been retired for a few years, but I still find my time filled with honey-do lists, projects, and challenges. Just now, I am learning Web site design in order to develop a professional Web site. I'm also learning Photoshop CS2 so I can add my own graphics to it. Our property in Julian was razed during the Cedar Fire in 2003. All that remained was charred stumps and powdery gray topsoil. But you'd be amazed how rapidly Mother Nature renews herself. Oak and pine trees are beginning to spring up. Where I once lamented that the soil had been sterilized, I now find myself working with chain saw, pruner, hedger and weed whacker. I also learned plumbing skills to repair PVC pipes so I could resurrect the water system. I've lived in my Poway condo for over 20 years. In that time, I've watched this little city grow. When I was a kid, Poway was a rural city in the wilderness. Now, the "City in the Country" has become a suburban community. Poway can even boast of its own Walmart, Home Depot and Costco. Civilization has arrived! I was born at Paradise Valley Hospital in San Diego. (It was then called "Paradise Valley Sanitarium"; My sister and brother never neglected to remind me that I was born in the "sanitarium.") My family and I lived at 6446 Detroit Avenue (which later became 6426 Skyline Drive)....Expand for more
I attended Encanto Elementary school for three years until Valencia Park Elementary opened, a school two blocks away from our home. After graduation there, I went to Samuel Gompers Junior High for a year but then transferred to Mabel E. O’Farrell Junior High when it opened; it was a block from our home. I graduated from Abraham Lincoln Senior High School in 1963. At Lincoln I was interested in science. But my passion was German: I became president of the German club. I attended San Diego State College where I earned a BA in chemistry with a minor in sociology. My parents were very gracious to allow me to remain living at home until I graduated and moved to Los Angeles. When I graduated from college, I attended UCI – California College of Medicine for four years. Then, I continued for two more years in the UCI pediatric residency program. My last year of pediatric residency training, I spent at the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. If I had had Ronald Colman's voice and Erroll Flynn's good looks, my life would probably have been totally different. :) My bio is an example that a slow reader who begins life with modest intelligence and scant financial resources can succeed. Woody Allen in one of his movies said, “Ninety percent of success is showing up.” John F. Kennedy in one of his speeches spoke about tenacity. A line from a play I once read went something like: “If you see what you want, you’ve got to grab it and hold on tight until your fingers break.” Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. What's more, nothing in the world is more precious than those who love you and stand by you in the bad times as well as the good. Or the teachers who ignited the way to your success.
