Bill's Story
Well, it seems that the many “junk” emails I have received from classmates.com encouraging me to re-subscribe have finally worked! As I pass through the midpoint of my 70th year, it occurred to me that it might be really interesting to do some “memory mining” of my teenage years at MHS. And, carrying this metaphor a bit further, I think it would be interesting to discover connections with other “miners” from classmates.com who might also find it interesting.
To start out, here’s a brief look at what I’ve been up to since high school. After graduation, I joined a wheat harvest in Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. The following Fall I attended Texas A&M for a year, then transferred to WVU for a semester before joining the Air Force for 4-1/2 years. Then on to Colorado to finish college, get married, and start my professional career at Lockheed Martin as a Systems Engineer. I then worked on several independent contracts to finish out my career and retire with my wife, Christine here in the Denver area.
Along the way, I became very interested ...Expand for more
in skiing, some travel, history, James Michener novels, ham radio (my call sign is W1UWN), and genealogy.
Speaking about genealogy, a few days ago, using Ancestry.com, I discovered that my distant 3rd cousin on my mon’s side was Oliver Windell Holmes Jr. who, in addition to being a well-known Supreme Court Justice in the 1800s, also wrote a few quotes that have been especially meaningful to me... and here they are:
“A person’s mind stretched to a new idea never returns to its original dimensions.”
And:
“Many people die with their music still in them. Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it time runs out.”.
So, at this point with a mind ready to be stretched to new dimensions and more “music” to make, I begin this new venture to connect and reminisce with my West Virginia classmates.
I'll be posting my thoughts in the new "Conversations" section of this website, I look forward to many interesting and lively dialogs about our long past experiences at that great high school near Decker's Creek!
