Bill's Story

Greetings classmates. Barely Graduated from BHS Jun 1963 always admired you beautiful studious girls. Going on to the U of Missouri I Began to get my footing making social inroads leading to way too much party and not enough study resulted in a greetings note from Uncle Sam. My dad could see me headed in that direction so ensured no party by making future college plans into a mandatory...read parental... reorientation at Wentworth Military Academy Jr College 63-64. Virtually NO party opportunity/booze or girls distraction which helped me make Natl Honor Society and Letter at Jr College Football...a blessed opportunity to make up for my many shortcomings at BHS. Thanks Pop, I needed that to get a jump start on life. So on to the U of Missouri where I promptly reverted to my old ways ....fraternity, pledge, party, booze and girls....next semester saw me on Scholastic and also Social Probation (caught in a panty raid) and forced to live off campus. Naturally also lost my student deferment and got a draft notice leading me to BEG my way back into school and into AFROTC with out the requisite GPA. LUCKY ONCE AGAIN. However, THIS time I got the message and on 31 Jan 1968, I was a B.S. Ed grad (and a secondary school teacher in History) from the U of Missouri Columbia, Mo and had a 2Lt reserve commission from Air Force ROTC. Old man was proud but almost immediately followed by my really ONE big disappointment in my life failing my pilot physical (genetic eye issue). So when called up in Feb 68 I became a student at Aircraft Maintenance Officer Tech School for 8 months at Chanute AFB, Illinois. Then upon graduation in Oct 68 I was the first and only 2lt to go VFR direct to Vietnam assigned to fighter maintenance while most others went to Thailand. From Nov 68-to Dec 69 I was a 2Lt then 1st Lt fighter flight line Maint Officer in the 308th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Tuy Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, launching F-100D fighters over Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos which provided some pretty interesting..sometimes scary moments, Lost a few people and learned to greatly appreciate life as under constant threat of attacks mandated growing up on a fast track. As a single slightly crazy dude and a wanna be fighter pilot I sought ways to make my tour more interesting so talked my way into flying a number of combat missions with the US Army 48h Assault Helo Company (UH-1s) supporting the 28th Whitehorse ROK and similarly flew several Forward Air Controller missions (O-1/2) with the Herb FACs from the 21st TASS. After 13 months in Vietnam, I came back to Travis Air Force Base, Calif to not so friendly anti war greetings...still more trauma for me than actual combat. Assigned to Florida (F-4s) from 70 to 72...great SCUBA and several overseas deployments. Got married in April to a 2Lt WAF (loved her paycheck and 66 Mustang), went on alert and two weeks later, in response to the North Vietnamese Easter invasion, I deployed from the US in late Apr 72 again assigned as the squadron maintenance officer for the 308th Tac Ftr Sq to Udorn RTAFB, Thailand where we began launching daily bombing missions over North Vietnam via our 'summer help' F-4Es for nearly six months.. Lost three birds to the bad guys...but thankfully no morts and left two POWs behind. Also got an illegal mission in one of my jets up over Laos, and N Vietnam. Back in the states at Homestead, I was soon then assigned to Sembach, Germany to join my wife living on the economy....asssigned to the 17th AF staff giving me a lot of autonomy and thus was a .great assignment.....and of course, again much MORE BEER and great skiing and exposure to several foreign cultures. Helped that I had learned passable German thanks to the U of Maryland courses opening many many more great opportunities. Also graduated from the U of Utah overseas (campus professors assigned from Utah to Ramstein AB, Germany) winding up with an MS in Ind...Expand for more
ustrial Relations. Left Germany in 1976 as I was selected to cross train into munitions so enroute TDY to Lowry AFB (Denver Colorado) followed by 1976-78 in the 388MMS (Munitions Maintenance Squadron) and then into the 388 Equipment Maint Sq. Late 1978 found me on select special assignment as the maintenance/logistics Project Officer for first USAF F-16s. We began the planning and bed down of the first F-16s at Hill AFB, After we got the F-16s on board it was back to the flight line as the 16TFTS AMU OIC. Utah provided .more good skiing and dirt biking in the mountains and more adventure. Then as a newly promoted major I was assigned for four years from 1980-84 as the A-10 Program Mgr at the Pentagon (in the middle of the aptly named swamp) in Wash DC. Lived in Woodbridge VA and suffered a horrible several hour commute every week day. At the end of that fun (NOT!!!), I was assigned to Kunsan Air Base, Korea as a Cmdr of a nuclear munitions/maint sq. (8th EMS). That was an EYE OPENING EXPERIENCE. Learned a lot about nuclear weapons and their maintenance. Then in 1985 sent back to the USA and on to two more Sq Cmdr jobs in the 363rd TFW Shaw AFB S.C. and also as the Asst Dep Cmdr Maint on F-16s. Then switched wings in 1987 to the 507th TAC Air Wing as the sole consolidated maintenance commander for supporting OT-37s, Ch-3s and OV-10s also at Shaw AFB, SC (managed some great flying opportunities as well). Autonomy once again and a great assignment. Promoted to Full Colonel in 1989, I became the co Deputy Director of Muntions for TAC Hdqtrs at Langley AFB. Then with the build up for Iraq and on During the Desert Storm I went on to the TAC battle staff. Once the war started I also served in a highly classified special intelligence capacity for deployed fighter forces fighting the Iraqis in Desert Storm. At the end of Desert Storm in 1991, I was tasked to become first the DCM (Deputy Commander for Maintenance) and then due to a "Dumb" air staff reorganization (McPeak) then became the Logistics Gp Cmdr of the 343/354 Tac Ftr Wg (F-16s/A-10s) at Eielson AFB, Alaska from 1991-94 retiring as a full colonel to Fairbanks, Alaska. Turned down a job to become a director of Nuclear Surety seeing that Alaska was my paradise and wanted to avoid the sure to follow politics of that job.. Upon retirement to Fairbanks I became a well paid Campaign Mgr for Alaskas only US Congressman Don Young for two campaigns.....very good money but made me absolutely aware of the fact that I could NEVER be a politician for a living. Much too much of a challenge to my personal integrity and honor. Worked a few months in Las Vegas as a well paid tech writer for Lockheed Martin setting up labor contracts for the Pacific Alaska bombing ranges. Did not want to leave Alaska so decided not to continue with Lockheed as a Pacific area manager thus retiring to the last frontier. Also did some more independent logistics consulting but in late 1996, I got tired of paying too much in taxes to Uncle Sam and became a fully retired Alaska outdoorsman, Wild life fan, fly fisherman, trout fisherman, snow machiner, distance biker (also fat tire biker on frozen rivers during winter), sea kayaker, ski jor fan (I have four Siberian Huskies), avid dirt biker, periodic lousy gold prospector and full time Leisure Consultant. Established a rental property business owning several. If you are thinking of coming this far north to ALASKA, drop me a line and I will make suggestions to make your visit more enjoyable. I am also a volunteer road service commissioner responsible for upkeep and plowing of our local roads and member of the AFA etc. Fairbanks, Alaska embodies the freedom and INDEPENDENCE I thought I was fighting for during my 26.5 years in uniform. Life is Good...no, GREAT.... for this old chieftain. BTW being better lucky than good I am living proof that GOD takes care of fools and idiots. GO BHS!

Good Alaska beer always makes the whole scene better
While saluting the US Air Force color guard for the huge welcome home parade yesterday a good friend caught me saluting the flag and showing my life long intense patriotism. Over six thousand soldiers and airmen marched le
