Bill's Story

Greetings to the Class of 1960! A correction to the yearbook. In the 1960 Koala, my picture was reversed with another William ROBERT Smith. Now I am sure he is a very nice man, but my name is William R. Smith (friends called me Bill)_ and my correct photo is on page 51, second line down, second from left and yes, I was the one in ROTC as a platoon leader (and was on the award winning rifle team.) Our rifle team was awarded the first ever school letter given other than for major sports, because of our winning the Western ROTC shooting match in 1960. I entered and served in the Navy from 1960 to 1964. I served as an Electronic Tech and was based in the San Diego area at a transmitter sight which provided communications for the entire Eastern Pacific for all Navy ships. One vivid memory was being on duty the day President Kennedy was killed - I was convinced we were about to go to war because of the messages that were being sent to all Naval units. I am fortunate enough to be retired from banking and teaching money management classes. I have lived in northern California for 28 years. I am now widowed. Not long ago, I lost the love of my life of 34 years to an agressive form of breast cancer. My wife was an exceptional lady, mother, and partner. She attended Orange High School in So. Cal. We both fought the cancer ...Expand for more
with all we had, butshe went home to be with her Lord early this year. She was 60 years old. I enjoy good health and am an active traveler, having been to many parts of the world on cruise ships as well as land tours. I have two children and three grandchildren at present. Our son served with distinction in the U. S. Marines (2 combat tours in Iraq) and is now married living in Boise, ID. I am a life long amateur astronomer and have a telescope on a ranch north of my town. I taught classes in astronomy part time and was also able to give lectures on cruise ships. In addition to travel, I enjoy photography, good music, and am active in my church. I try to live in such a way so that others will see that I am a Christian who loves the Lord - not just in name only. Like you, I have many good memories of Poly High, but I hated to see it move. I always loved the buildings on the hills. Then, of course, Riverside City College took that place. I have yet to go to any reunions of the Class of 1960, but am open to that should someone plan an event. I would like to hear from others of the Class of '60, but do not spend large amounts of time on the computer. I have an active life with many interests. I would answer emails sent to me. I hope you are doing well, enjoy good health, and are happy in your current situation.
