Bill's Story
Went to Cornell and studied physics, thinking I was going to invent antigravity or something and save the world. But I also wrote for the student newspaper and the humor magazine. After two years in the Air Force (flying a desk), ended up working for a newspaper in California, and eventually discovered there was a niche for writers who understand science. Did a lot of work for Scholastic Magazines, writing science articles for magazines they pass put to middle school kids -- the modern version of those "My Weekly Reader" things we used to get. Now I work for Cornell writing press releases about their research. Yeah, still working full-time. Retirement would be boring. I get to watch all the people who are really inventing stuff to save the world.
Fellow students at Cornell included Peter Yarrow, who went on to be part of of Peter, Paul and Mary, who was the president of the Cornell Folk Song Club, where I got some experience playing guitar and singing in front of groups of people. In California in the 60s I got into a lot more of ...Expand for more
that, discovered I could get paid for it, and took it up as an avocation. You may remember that I was always happy to get up in front of the class and perform. I spent some time traveling around playing at folk festivals and little clubs, getting to see every mainland U.S. state except Maine, and four Canadian provinces. Back in grade school I was writing silly poems, so I wrote a few funny topical songs. I was going to write the great American novel but what I came up with was the great American protest song, a comment on the shrinking of San Francisco Bay called "Garbage!" that got into the Sierra Club Songbook and was recorded by Pete Seeger. My 15 minutes of fame. Hob-nobbed with some famous people -- at least famous if you pay attention to folk music -- Doc Watson, Jean Ritchie, Joan Baez. I was once about 15 feet away from Bob Dylan, backstage at the Philadelphia Folk Festival.
Gave up all that when I got the full-time job at Cornell, but I'm still involved with the Cornell Folk Song Club, helping to put on concerts and sings.
