Bill's Story

Bill & Betty (Wiest '67) are actually still alive and living in the old homestead (451 East Drive) in Oak Ridge. Now KC4GW and Betty, KA4OUI. We haven't been too active on the ham bands since cell phones were invented, but do get on 2m & 70cm from time to time...mostly Red Cross related. We came back to Tennessee from near "Rottenchester, NY" in 1978, when I went to work at Sprague Electric Company, in Clinton, as their Industrial Relations Manager. Clinton and Oak Ridge were big rivals in the 60s, so I told all the plant people I was from New York....until they got to like me...! We bought a nice little 3BR house in Claxton shortly after moving there. Claxton was a great, nice, quiet little community, 10 miles from everywhere. Not unlike Williamson, NY, but not as friendly ....missed our Yankee friends.... but not the winters.... Ten days after Betty and I moved into our newly constructed house, my mother died, at 66, of an aneurysm. It was a real shock, but I have the solace of living the entire summer with her and my dad, having them get to know Betty better, (we moved to New York, immediately after we were married in 1976.) I had aneurysm surgery in August of 2004. Guess we know whose genes I got! Spent three weeks in ICU...didn't know they were designer genes! Betty "retired" in 1978 and took on the job of full time homemaker and eventually "stay-at-home-MOM" In 1980, we had our second son, and first child together (remember Jason?). Merritt arrived 1/5/80 (4 days 19 hours and 22 minutes too late to claim on 1979 taxes!) Many times I wish we had taken that Jeep ride in the Smokies at Christmas. That was so much fun, we "decided" to have more! Twelve months and 23 days later we had TWIN boys Tony and Pat. Had to get a business license to buy diapers! Life as we had known it ended and a new phase began. After the birth of three boys in 13 months, plans for a Williams basketball team were BRIEFLY considered. In 1983, after 15 years of being nice to EVERYONE 7 days a week 24 hours a day, and a new "scum of the earth" plant manager, I changed careers. Computers were so much more logical. Enjoyed the vanguard of the PC revolution with our speedy 3.76 mhz machines, GIGANTIC 5 meg hard disks (who could EVER need more?) and our friend...DOS, the Black Screen. Life was simple then. In 1989, Betty's family snagged me into the gun business. At that time I had a partner, in Los Angeles, and was traveling the eastern half of the US with frequent trips to LA (not lower Alabama). In any given 30 day period, it was not unusual to be on a plane and somewhere else most of those days. The prospect of being at home more appealed to me. Turned out the hours in the family business were even more brutal AND I didn't get frequent flyer miles! In 2000, Betty's father died we began the long process of selling the business. My "retirement" began November 4, 2004. Betty had been working in the business, full time, since 1985. I, being VP/General Manager and her father being CEO gave her the flexibility she needed to keep up with the kids. We took a year off after the sale of the business, to decompress. In November, 2005, we re-started the book business(Guncraftbooks.com), which had been a part of the larger business for nearly 50 years. Since Betty is infinitely more flexible and talented than I, she went to work at TNBank in August 2005, primarily to make health insurance more affordable. Hasn't made VP, yet, but she is now Asst. to the VP of Human Resources. Where did I go wrong?! We now enjoy the weekends and I am a volunteer with the Oak Ridge chapter of the American Red Cross. I spend some time helping in the local chapter and am part of their National Disaster response team. Spent three weeks during the summer of 2005, in Atlanta, working with evacuees, from Katrina, then another thr...Expand for more
ee weeks in Miami and Biloxi. All in all, life is good and WARMER than NY! Update 3/5/2009 Lots of things have happened since this was first written. Sadly, our #1 son (Jason) was killed in a motorcycle accident in 2007. No speeding, drugs nor alcohol. Lost control and hit a light pole. Our #3 son (Tony) was married in 2008 to a wonderful girl, Dorothy Dioso, from Manila. He finished his six years with the Navy and they are presently in Oklahoma where he continues working with airplanes. #2 son (Merritt) is struggling in the world of work. Hopefully he will find his place soon. #4 son (Patrick)is still relaxing (at home). Betty and my sister (Shelley) went through bouts with Breast cancer. Both are now doing well with all indications their cancer is in remission. I have sent several doctor's children to college recently. I had two heart surgeries in 2008. First was in June, in Iowa, when I was working with flood victims for the Red Cross. The second, was in Oak Ridge, when I collapsed ON my trainer in November. They decided to quit fooling around and crack open my chest for 5 bypasses. It has been a rough couple of years, but Betty and I are both doing well. All of our debts are paid and we appear to have enough to live for a few more years - if AIG stays in business! It is still warmer here than in New York!! Update 1/21/10 We spent Christmas with our daughter-in-law's family in Manila, Philippines. We thoroughly enjoyed this visit, and meeting our new family. Driving in The Philippines is an experience. Today I read the obituary of an old high school buddy, Bill Herron. I wrote the following to his brother "Steve....another part of me is gone. All I have are stale, but fond memories of Bill. He and I (and you) failed to keep in touch over the years since high school. My life is diminished by the loss of every friend, especially those I have ignored. Only recently have I made an effort to get back in touch those I knew, long ago. I was blessed with so many intelligent, talented and witty friends who are now spread all over the world, I'll never find them all, but I will be better for each one I do. I hope to see you Saturday. " Don't diminish me further.....keep in touch... All in all it is warmer in The Philippines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 2/18/2016 I am now working on sending my doctor's grandchildren to school! They seem to be obsessed with getting my continued contributions, my cardiologist, recently, said, I will make it to 90! #4 son has been hogging the headlines since the last update. Patrick was married in 2011, to another wonderful girl from The Philippines. While he was at Great Lakes Naval boot camp, she delivered "PJ". We were expecting her delivery to be 10/11/12, but she was early, and provided us with an even easier date to remember...9/16/12. My mother's birthdate (in 1912) and her date of death (9/16/1978). Since Patrick is only 6'7", the Navy decided submarine duty would be best for him. Since I had seen "Red October", I figured he would be ok, but NOOO, the navy found an opening on a fast attack sub (SSN751) with 6'3" clearance in passageways (I had to duck when touring). After a seven month deployment and advancement to ET3 in record time, 12 stitches and an aching back, he requested a transfer. Turns out, the Navy does not look favorably on transfer requests, regardless of merit. Ironically, he is now BUILDING SUBMARINES with "Electric Boat", in Groton CT. Next month Betty and I will be going to CT for the birth of only the second girl born in the Williams lineage, since 1877. Those of you rejoicing when being told "your cancer is in remission", beware...My sister, Shelley, died of brain cancer, in 2015, after being told her breast cancer was gone, THREE times. Ironically, she was 66...same as our mother when she died. Hopefully, Rome will be warmer...
