Billy's Story

Billy is originally from Starkville, Mississippi, having attended Sudduth Elementary School, Henderson Jr. High School, Starkville High School, Hinds Community College, Mississippi State University, and The American University. After receiving bachelor of science and master's degrees in agriculture, Billy moved to Jackson, where he served over 8 years as press secretary and director of public affairs for then Commissioner of Agriculture Jim Buck Ross. He moved to Washington, District of Columbia, to attend The American University, where he received his master of public administration (MPA) degree. here he worked for the U.S. Senate and now for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he has served as a special adviser to both Secretaries of Agriculture Mike Espy and Dan Glickman. He then became director of public affairs at USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service, where he spearheaded the announcement of the National Organic Program. Now he serves there as director of outreach. Billy's favorite book is Ernest Hemingway's "Old Man and the Sea," because it is a powerful moral tale told in a way that almost anybody can understand. Two of Billy's favorite poems are "The City" by Cavafy and "Thanatopsis" by William Cullen Bryant.
