Blanche's Story
I enjoy being around people who speak more than one language and in high school, Spanish was my favorite subject.
I was fortunate enough to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Brazil and learned to speak Portuguese fluently. After my Peace Corps service I joined the Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA)program and was assigned to the Yup'ik Eskimo village of Kongiganak, in southwest Alaska. language was a profound, life-changing experience for me.
Suffice it to say that I feel blessed indeed to have had the incredible experiences I had at Kongiganak and how I learned, over time, to see the world through the eyes of the indigenous sub-arctic and arctic people -- people who have lived in peace with the land since time immemorial. Each day I look forward to learning something new and am grateful to be in this incredible state, Alaska, the great land!
