Bob's Story
In school I was known as Robert Carlson. When I went away for the summer, then to college, I became Bob. Now the only one who would ever call me Robert is my wife, and that when I am in trouble.
I met my wife, Susan, while attending college in Ohio in 1970. She grew up on a farm in Ohio. We were married in Columbus October 7, 1972. We have two sons, 30 and 33 years old. And three grandsons, 5, 3, and 21 months, with another grandchild coming in September.
A graduate of Asbury University (Wilmore, KY), I have served as a pastor in NY, OH and FL. We moved to Port Charlotte, FL, which is between Sarasota and Fort Myers, in 1991. For 14 years I served as the chaplain and patient advocate at Fawcett Memorial Hospital. For the last six years, I have served on the staff of First United Methodist Church of Punta Gorda. Our attendance is as low as 500 in the summer and as high as 1500 in the winter. Life is always joy and there is never a dull moment.
Sue went back to school later in life and became a nuclear medicine technologist. We worked in the same hospital, but ...Expand for more
then she left to take care of our grandchildren.
Some of you may remember my brother and sister. Gilbert graduated in 1963. He has worked through the years as an engineer, then he and his wife served in an inner-city ministry in St. Louis, MO. They are now retired in Asheville, NC. Wilma is an RN. She and her husband served as missionaries in Papua New Guinea, then Russia. Her husband is now the pastor of a church in Painesville, OH. Our parents died in 1996 and '97.
Since 2001, I have performed as a ventriloquist for entertainment and ministry. It all started when a member of the ethics committee I chaired mention that her father is Jimmy Nelson. You remember those Nestles Quick commercials 1955 to 1965. Jimmy mentored me and has become a friend. I'll never grow up, as long as I continue to play with dolls and stuffed animals. But my wife doesn't like to be seen with me in public.
If you are ever in Southwest Florida, please call me. I would love to get together with B-G friends. In fact, I do see several as they visit here in Paradise.
