Bob's Story

Everyone has their own lives to tend to, so I can't imagine why anyone would want to read my li'l ol' story, but here it is nonetheless: Many left turns have brought me to where I am today, but I'm the only one, right? After BHS I spent some time at North Central College in Naperville and got heavily into the radio biz through its fantastic radio program. While on the air I got a full-time DJ job at Crazy Rock in Romeoville (before it was the "gentleman's" club it is today). One night a video production company came to the club to shoot a commercial and I became friends with the crew. I was soon hired on with the video company and finally worked normal hours -- that is until I took on extra part-time work at a radio station in Morris. My client list at the video production company grew and I was producing videos that aired nationally. Along the way more and more of my clients asked me to provide a voice for their projects. Then some of them wanted me to become their face, spokesperson, host --whatever -- I was now busy doing a lot of on-camera work, much of it on Chicago-based TV. I also found I had a passion for the engineering aspect of audio and video, so I spent much of my spare time happily learning all I could take in on that part of the business. One day one of my clients asked if I had ever considered becoming an on-air journalist. It's something I never thought I'd consider in my younger days, but all of a sudden it attracted a more mature me. So in 1999 I got a resume, a cover letter, and a VHS tape together (VHS was still very much the de facto video format standard for the day) and sent it to a few TV stations. The third one to bite was ABC affiliate KQTV in St. Joseph, Missouri. I went to the interview, loved the station, the people, and the news philosophy there. The station wanted me, but didn't have an opening for a news journalist. To lock me into a contract, even though I had no weather forecasting experience, I was offered a morning weather job, with the promise that I'd get the very next news reporting position that became available. That day never came for me because I was instead asked to anchor the prime-time daily newscasts when that became available about a year later. So I was the station's prime-time news anchor for about a decade and loved every minute of it, but a part of me grew lonely for the engineering side of the business. Then one day out of nowhere the station's entire union engineering staff was eliminated! Knowing my ability and interest in engineering, the station asked me to make a tough decision. I could keep thin...Expand for more
gs as-is or I could get a promotion and become the station's IT Director -- a brand new department that was created to keep with the changing times in the TV business. I went for the latter. The station still wanted me on the air with daily newscasts, but my new hours meant I'd now anchor the morning 90-minute newscast instead of prime-time. The hours SUCK, but I'm quite happy I made the switch. Our Chief Engineer was recently asked to leave and I'm filling that role as well, so now I'm responsible for everything technical from the top of our 508' antenna to every component in the building and the studios and our live truck along with anchoring the daily morning newscast. It's a lot of work -- but so satisfying on so many levels! My on-air work at KQTV eventually gained attention at The American Angus Association, headquartered right here in St. Joseph. In 2010 The PR Department wanted to begin a weekly news-magazine on youtube and asked me to host the program. It's been so successful "The Angus Report" scaled up drastically and began airing on RFDTV's national cable/satellite network channel twice per week about a year later. The program has just recently begun a four-day per week run on RFDTV. The crew there is young, OMG-talented, and an absolute blast to work with! In my personal life I get out to ski (snow and water) every chance I get and visit my brother in Colorado, where I can get my outdoor "fix." I also love to skydive, swim, hike -- generally stay active. Who among us has nothing but cheer all our lives? Not me! I'm not proud that I've now been through two failed marriages. They both ended simply due to incompatibility, rather than any sort of abuse or anything like that. I have three beautiful children from the marriages and I maintain a good, healthy relationship with their moms, so getting to see them at any time is just a phone call away or in my daughter's case, a trip to Joliet. I'm single now, but I don't wish to grow old by myself. My mistakes have taught me what's really important in a future bride, so my next commitment will be my last. That's the nutshell version of my life since BHS. Thanks for staying awake and making it through my story! I most certainly don't fault anyone who's into social media, but it's just not for me. I don't get the attraction, so I ain't got none of that mybook or facespace. I've never taken a selfishy, either. I do have a twitter account that I hardly use, but I have it only because my job requires it! A South Park episode from a few years ago pretty well describes how I feel about that sort of thing ; )
