Bob's Story

Before, during and after those Kearny High school days in Mission Village, Serra Mesa, Linda Vista, Kearny Mesa and Mira Mesa was the most diverse populated community in San Diego County. Wouldn't most agree? I had a wonderful time at Kearny High School during my teens. A definite balance despite the challenges of growing. My interest was music since I was 8, and formed our first band while at Wegeforth Elementary with my oldest friend in the world, Oscar Vargas, at Taft Junior High and Kearny High. I also played a lot of baseball and managed Little League at Mission Village. During the 9th grade at Taft Junior High I remember my late mother, a graduate of San Diego High School 1955, 20 years before I graduated, drove me one evening to the high school I would attend. On the right side of the building, (outside the choir room back then) the letters read Stephen Watts Kearny High School. It seemed so unreal that I was actually going to high school. During my sophmore year 1972 - 1973 I remember going to my first Komets football game against Hoover High School. It was packed, it was loud and we won! After the game many of us went back to the "after dance". I loved Friday nights during football season. Nick Akers class of 75, Bob McCreery class of 74, Jim Gilsdorf class of 74 formed a rock band with me. We rehearsed most nights and gigs were energetic. One of the most memorable was playing two nights at the Kearny Spring Show. During 1973 - 1974 my Junior year was incredible! Our senior class dominated San Diego County football and basketball. To see Don Norcross, Ron Means (God bless him), Ed Imo, and Mark Hoaglin lead our Komets at San Diego Stadium during CIF football, and beat Patrick Henry High was priceless. We went undefeated! It was sweet to see the highlights on the news at 11. Our basketball team was hot and remember that game with Madison we ended up winning. We also won CIF basketball going undefeated. I sang in Kearny's Acappella Choir during 11th and 12th grade. During Christmas we sang Handel's Messiah, only the 3rd high school in Southern California to sing college level arrangements at that time. My music was expanding and started experimenting more with major 7th and 9th chords on my guitar, vocal harmony arrangements and writing. In 1974 - 1975 my senior year was a time of growing. I remember registering for the draft, was driving more and college was in my sights. My parents were hoping I would enroll at San Diego State University. I was forming a new band, not rock but more light jazz. I met Frank Litavish class of 1973, while in the advanced drama class I met DeeDee Carver class of 1976, Tony Adamo class of 1976, and Vernon Bratten class of 1974. We were inspired by Sergio Mendes Brasil 66 version of Fool On The Hill, Van Morrison's Moon Dance, Antonio Carlos Jobim / Norman Gimbel's The Girl From Ipanema, America's Lonely People, and many others including original compositions. After high school I attended community colleges San Diego Mesa and City College. I studied Materials Management and went to work in Purchasing and Manufacturing in San Diego. In 1984 I met my wife Hazel and we were married in 1985. Hazel had a marketing degree from The Women's University of The Philippines, b...Expand for more
ut entered Pacific College in San Diego to change directions in her career. We lost our baby, 6 months from a miscarriage and though we love children, we never had any after that. We did share a love for sports and supported our teams, the Sockers, Padres and Chargers. In 1988 we relocated to San Francisco to expand our careers. I finished college and went into the accounting field and since 1990 have expanded my accounting principles combined with sales and customer service management. Today I work in accounting and operations in San Francisco. Hazel works as a financial analyst at Stanford University. 1995 we were at a crossroads in our lives. What was my purpose? What did I really want to do? Hazel and I were doing well in our careers, we bonded with many friends in the Bay Area, and going back to San Diego was a breeze from San Francisco. But there was a HOLE in my heart. One day I was led to attend a gathering of friends that studied the Bible. To me, I found the study was interesting. Hazel seemed to grasp this belief in God better than I did. One day I attended a men's retreat, kind of a get away and that is where I found Christianity. In October 1995 I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. During March 2000 I got this itch to produce, write, arrange and rehearse songs with a band of 5 musicians from two churches for the next 8 months. On December 8, 2000, we released a CD titled "At The Hillside." It did well and the proceeds went to 3rd world countries in need. In 2004 I enrolled at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. I studied Christian theology and ministry and graduated in May 2008. I serve in the pastoral ministry at City Team Ministry in San Francisco. I have found purpose in my life. Its a passion for helping people, listening to them, and encouraging them during times of suffering and prosperity. I love to help uplift, hold up and build up people. Hazel and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary on June 1st. When we aren't working we love to dine with friends. I love to play my guitar, listen to light jazz, am a fan of late 60's and all 70s "rock and soul", and enjoy watching documentaries. We enjoyed the 20, 25, and 30 year class of 75 reunions. We had a great time at the Kearny High Choir reunion August 15th, 2009 in San Diego, and hope to attend our 35th reunion in 2010. I have offered to be on the setup committee. We still root for the Padres and Chargers. We also root for the Arizona Diamondbacks when we visit our other home in Goodyear, Arizona. At 53 and 52, Hazel and I are able to travel more. We take a roundtrip cruise from San Francisco to Alaska for our 25th anniversary, hope to visit New York, , and want to visit a little island off of South Africa called Mauritius. I have never taken the time to share all my life until now. I look forward to living everyday and serving God first, my wife and others. There always seems to be left over time for myself. I wish you and your families the best in all you do, your health, circumstances, valleys, and prosperities. Share your thoughts with me. After all, we will always have Kearny High School in our hearts together for life. God bless you always. Bob and Hazel Eusebio Kearny High Class of 1975
