Robert's Story

Most of my classmates would say that I was quiet. At no time that I recall was I "in the spotlight", with the exception of my role in the play, Plenty of Money. That was fun! Thank you Mr. Byrne and Mr. Gagnon. I was always fascinated by airplanes, and wanted to be a pilot "when I grew up". My parents persuaded me to attend college, and as it turns out, they really wanted me to go to college to get the education that they did not have. I did. After that, there was either no time for airplanes, or when there was time, there was no money! Until knee surgeries slowed me down, I hiked all year round in the White Mountains. Winter hikes were always my favorite, but autumn colors are incredible from the top of a mountain. Now I walk, cycle, play golf, and paint with pastels and acrylics for fun and relaxation. The wildest thing I did in school, and probably the stupidest, was to build and launch rockets from the roof of my building in Boston! One rocket blew up on the launch pad and I had a painful ringing in my ears for 2-3 days. Pretty dumb when I look back on it! I don't really expect to work any more except perhaps a part-time job at a golf course, or some other fun job. I was inspired by John Powell, with whom I took several courses (Bio, Atomic Phys, Chem, Adv Chem, Adv Phys, and maybe another I don't remember). He encouraged my inquisitiveness. Also, in later years, as I finally came to know him better, my father became an incredible inspiration in my life. Boston, St. Louis, Pittsfield, Manhattan Beach, CA and several towns around Boston have been my home since attending BU from '64 to '68. Most of my moves have been for a job, but the (hopefully) last move will be for lifestyle, or at least that is the plan. Although I do not currently fly, I have been obsessed with flying airplanes since the time I could ride a bike to the Clinton airport and spend hours watching the airplanes and talking with the pilots. I did get my commercial license and instrument rating, and owne...Expand for more
d and flew small airplanes all over the eastern part of the country, but that time is over. I miss that a lot now. If I won $100 million, I'd give much of it to charities and to our kids, then spend the rest on an airplane, a home by the beach and travel to all those places I have loved and those which I have not yet had an opportunity to visit. My current age is 67, soon to be 68. When I was 12, 40 was very old and I never thought about what it would be like to reach that age, let alone reach the age I am now. How short-sighted! I remember reading Orwell and thinking that 1984 was such a long time in the future! After working for computer companies for so long and wearing a suit all day every day, I have settled into a new wardrobe of dockers and polo shirts, or blue jeans and t-shirts. Much more relaxed and more like me. My first job was at Ponds, where I got paid $1.98 per hour to load freight cars and service both ends of assembly lines. What I remember most about it is how hard the physical labor was, especially working inside freight cars at 100 degrees!. In my first professional job, I designed parts of jet airplanes for McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis, and got to climb into the F-15 jet fuel tanks that I had designed. it was HOT inside them too, but somehow seemed more acceptable than working in the freight car. Since then, I have worked for computer hardware companies and software companies, have taught technical courses in businesses around the world, and taught math in high schools around Massachusetts. Thank you, Alice Dempsey. I am now retired in Florida and have a lot more time to spend with my family, and exploring (finding) my artistic talents. I found a job working as a starter/ranger at a local country club, and can play for free when I have the time. Now that you have read my personal story, please leave me a little of your personal story, too. I'd like to hear how you spent the last 50 years, and what you are doing now. Thanks for reading and responding.
